GRATITUDE:

“I am deeply honored to have been selected as one of the recipients of the Mariposas Women’s Collective scholarship! As a first-generation student, receiving this scholarship means more than just financial support. It’s a reminder that you are not alone, anything is possible!”

My mom always tells me, “Échale ganas Kamilla, tu puedes hacer todo que te propongas. Estudia y trabaja para que tengas un buen futuro y no sufras como nosotros.” Through the lens of my parents who immigrated to the United States from Mexico, I have seen the struggles of surviving without much support and education. Despite the hardships, they’ve always worked tirelessly to give me the opportunities they never had. Everyday, I carry their dreams and sacrifices in hopes that I will one day be able to give back to them.

It is truly such a privilege to be able to continue my educational journey and have support from within my community. The guidance and encouragement from the team of Mariposas has been so heartwarming and inspiring. As I begin college as undeclared, I am committed to carry that forward to those around me while I strive to discover my own path!”

“Hello! My name is Zaareth Rodriguez, I was born and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico and moved to the USA when I was about 6 years old. Ever since I was little I knew my vocation was serving and aiding others, using my health and knowledge to help those who aren’t as fortunate as myself. I want to thank my parents and family for always supporting me no matter what the circumstances and always reminding me of my “why”. I also want to thank the Mariposa Woman’s Collective for supporting and encouraging young Latino students who want to pursue higher education. Thank you!”

“Hi my name is Valeria Murillo, I just graduated from Round Lake High School. I am going to The University in Illinois at Chicago for my 4 years. I plan on pursuing Nursing and getting my BSN. During my time in High School I was a part of Mariposas and volunteered to help host community gatherings. I also led/hosted a coat drive for the community, gathering over 500 coats plus other winter gear this past December. This past April I was giving an opportunity to go down to Springfield Illinois and talk to our state representative, Laura Favor Diaz about some issues students and I saw in the school district. I am going to continue giving back to the community and hope for many more awesome opportunities!”
