Operation At Ease is a service dog and resource organization for veterans and first responders

Operation At Ease takes dogs from shelters, pairs them with deserving veterans and first responders and provides a free guided training program for post-traumatic stress and mobility service dogs. In addition to our service dog training programs, we offer resources such as free therapy dog support, ensuring long-lasting assistance for both our country and community heroes.

Dropped leashes are a reality — at some point in the service dog teams’ lives, they will, intentionally or not, let go of their leash. That’s why we include this scenario in our public access testing to ensure readiness in such situations.

Donna and SDIT Dora are perfectly executing this scenerio. Dora came to us from Prison Pup Program. We thank you for taking care of her until we could!

🥳 Today is "SUPER PROUD" Wednesday!

For today's first ever, possibly never again, SUPER PROUD Wednesday, I bring you Mike and SDIT Zues!

Sweet Zeus was found abandoned in an apartment with a cat to keep him company. He was picked up by animal control and brought to Boght Veterinary Clinic where he sat for about 6 months before they called us to meet him.

While he settled well at the vet clinic, we have found during training that this young man experiences some significant over arousal. Our goal yesterday was to work calmly in the parking lot of Benson's Pet Center. Much to everyone's surprise, Zeus was able to walk into the store, politely greet employees, and come back to focus when needed.

So, today's SUPER PROUD Wednesday goes out to Mike for putting in the work outside of the classroom, showing up even when the day is bad, and not quitting (on yourself!). We are so grateful you chose us.

📣 Good Dog Alert!

Congratulations to the graduates of Campfire Canine!

Operation Song Upstate NY is coming up fast and I am grateful to have been able to nominate someone who has been such an incredible friend, mentor and steady support for me, Kyle McCraith.

While I could spend time listing his credentials and impressing you with his experience—from his service in the U.S. Army and Albany sheriff department, to his time as a U.S. Marshal, to the work he does today training police, search-and-rescue, and detection dogs—I won’t.

I could tell you that after his mentor, Doc, passed away, he carried Doc’s vision forward at SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech, and that a large part of what makes their canine department so remarkable today is because of his dedication and commitment.

But I won’t.

Because I think what matters most isn’t the impressive list of titles or accomplishments. It’s the person behind them, and the difference he has made through a lifetime of quietly doing the work.

Let awesome people know you think they’re awesome. Even if they begrudgingly accept the nomination, they deserve to know that their hard work, dedication, and impact don’t go unnoticed.

Today's Congratulations, Bravo, and Hell Yeah Go out to Laurie and SDIT Ruthie and Steph and SDIT Xeno for passing their Canine Good Citizen Urban from the American Kennel Club!

This is their second test in a series of three. Our evaluator said they breezed right through it, and it was THE BEST CGCU test he has ever seen! 🥳

Fun Fact about these ladies- They are our first female firefighters to join the OAE family! We thank you for your service and look forward to seeing your further success!

We had a lot of big things happen at OAE yesterday.

I will start with Nick and SDIT Apollo.

Yesterday they passed their Canine Good Citizen test from the American Kennel Club

They did this in the company of Mike and SD Hope who has been driving over an hour every week offering peer support for Nick while he is in class. He cheered Nick on the entire time.

The CGC is our hardest test. For no other reason than it's your first one. Having another veteran at your side makes it a little easier.

Congratulations, Bravo, and Well Done Nick! Looking forward to what's next!

⚖ According to the American's with Disabilities Act
a service dog is a dog individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability, directly related to that disability.

One task.

✅ You are allowed to train your own service dog.

✅ You are allowed to ask the person with the service dog two questions:
Is this a service dog?
What job does this dog perform?
** Please note you are only allowed to ask these questions if why the person needs the dog isn't obvious.

✅ Breed restrictions do not apply to service dogs

✅ Service dogs ARE NOT required to wear a service dog vest.

✅ Service dogs are allowed places that do not allow pets.

✅ New York state allows service dogs in training public access (other states may not)

❌ You are not allowed to ask for papers. Federal law states there is no licensing, registration, or certification for service dogs.

❌ You are not allowed to segregate someone with a service dog because other people have allergies or a fear of dogs.

❌ You cannot ask someone with a service dog to show you the task they perform to gain entry

📣 Good Dog Alert!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, a few good dogs!

🎓Congratulations to the recent graduates of Cautious Canine!

This small group class works on reading body language, introducing new experiences, and building confidence with the world around them.

Not your traditional obedience class, it was designed for dogs who might be overwhelmed by the constant movement of beginner.

Looking forward to seeing what these humans and their 💪🏼brave 4-legged friends do next!

17 days and a wake up.

That was the last text message we received from Bill of Fort Leavenworth a 30-year veteran of the United States Army.

17 days and a wake up until Bill is finally united with his service dog. Bill applied with us last July for a hearing dog to assist with alerting him when people approach. Bill served as a Warrant Officer flying Chinooks. While he loved to fly and serve his country the sheer amount of noise these helicopters omit stripped him of his hearing.

As always, it takes a village, so we called upon ours. We initially reached out to Out of the Pits, Inc. and placed with beautiful animal with a different veteran. To our surprise she was returned to us (first time in almost a decade!). It was then we realized she was meant for bigger things!

Bill and his wife Karen will be staying at TownePlace Suites by Marriott Latham Albany Airport. Their stay will cost us a little over $2,000. If anyone would like to donate their hotel points please email [email protected]
