Some films begin with an idea.
Others begin with a friendship.

For filmmaker Nancy Svendsen, the journey of creating 1IN3 has been deeply shaped by her dear friend Sarah McDonald - a writer, mother, cancer survivor, advocate, executive coach, motivational speaker and one of the film’s guiding lights.

Sarah’s honesty, resilience, humor, and openness about living through cancer helped inspire the heart of this project from the very beginning. Today, she continues to help bring the film to life not only as a participant on camera, but also as a trusted advisor, storyteller, and connector to communities who believe in caring for the whole person through a cancer diagnosis.

Coming up, our team will film Sarah and her family - capturing the real moments, relationships, and humanity that make 1IN3 so personal and universal at the same time.

This film exists because of brave conversations, trusted friendships, and people willing to share their truth.

Like so many navigating a diagnosis, she initially only knew the "standard" path. 1 in 3 explores the vital world of integrative oncology—where conventional medicine meets holistic healing. We are filming stories like Nicole’s to show that treating the person is just as important as treating the disease.

Some places stop you in your tracks. The Gathering Place in Cleveland, Ohio is one of them.

When our 1 IN 3 documentary team filmed at The Gathering Place, we weren't prepared for just how moved we would be. Every service - every workshop, every one-on-one support session, every wellness program - offered completely free of charge to individuals and families navigating a cancer diagnosis.

Since opening its doors in Beachwood in 2000, The Gathering Place has served over 65,000 individuals who have made more than 400,000 visits. That's not a statistic - that's 65,000 lives held with care during one of the hardest seasons a person can face.

It was there that we met Nicole Holloway, who graciously invited us into her cancer journey. Her story - and the community surrounding her - is at the heart of what 1 IN 3 is all about.

We are proud to feature The Gathering Place (TGP) and their CEO, Michele Seyranian, in our film. Their TGP in CLE initiative is expanding free cancer resources directly into Cleveland neighborhoods where residents are disproportionately affected by cancer - meeting people where they are.

This is integrative oncology in action. This is what it looks like when a community refuses to let anyone face cancer alone.

What if one of the most important parts of cancer care is the part no one tells you about?

The American Cancer Society tells us that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Most will navigate that diagnosis without knowing the full range of evidence-based care available to them - whether it's integrative therapies that ease treatment and restore a sense of control, the workplace protections that can determine whether a patient can focus entirely on survival, or the environmental science reshaping how we understand what causes cancer in the first place.

Our film is about changing that.
