Ross Township Historical Society to Host June Program on Butler County Summer Fun of the 1950s and 1960s

The Ross Township Historical Society invites the community to attend its June meeting on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Ross Township Administration Building.

This month’s featured presentation, “Hot Fun in the Summertime: Butler County’s Summer Delights of the 1950’s and 1960’s,” will be presented by Brian Smith, Executive Director of the Butler County Historical Society.

Summertime entertainment for families in Butler County offered an almost endless variety of activities during the two decades following World War II. Smith’s presentation will take attendees on a nostalgic journey back to the era of drive-in movie theaters, drive-in restaurants, local swimming pools, and many other favorite summer gathering spots throughout the county.

The program will also explore the history of local snack manufacturers and Butler County-based soda bottling companies that helped define the tastes of summer for generations of residents. Ross Township’s own beloved Meadowbrook Pool will be highlighted as part of the presentation.

The event is free and open to the public. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend and enjoy an evening celebrating the memories and traditions of summertime in Butler County.

"Decoration Day" began after the Civil War as a day to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. Communities across the country gathered each spring to remember those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

After World War I, Decoration Day expanded from honoring only those who died in the Civil War to honoring American military personnel who died in all wars. The shift began around 1919 as communities recognized the sacrifices made during the Great War.

The name “Memorial Day” first began to be commonly used after World War II, but it did not become the official federal name until 1967.

Today, Memorial Day remains a time of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. As we enjoy the long weekend, we also pause to honor their legacy and the freedoms they helped preserve.

Thanks Mike Ryan for attending our event today!
