North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center is hosting an event next Friday:
STRENGTHS-BASED GROUP WORK WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2018, 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Presenter: Andrew Malekoff, Executive Director, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center; author, Group Work with Adolescents: Principles and Practice, now it its 21st year and 3rd Edition; and editor, Social Work with Groups, a journal of community and clinical practice.
In this workshop participants will learn a seven-component framework for strengths-based group work with school-aged children and adolescents that will improve the quality of care in their direct practice regardless of setting. The approach in this training will be mini-lecture, small and large group interaction and activity, video and Q & A. The aim is for the trainees to learn, understand and apply the following framework of practice principles that were developed by Andrew Malekoff:
Form groups based on members' felt needs and wants, not diagnoses.
Structure groups to welcome the whole person, not just the troubled parts.
Integrate verbal and nonverbal activities.
Develop alliances with relevant other people in group members' lives.
Decentralize authority and turn control over to group members.
Maintain a dual focus on individual change and social reform.
Understand and respect group development as key to promoting change.
The core influences on this framework are strengths-based practice and youth development. Some of the converging lines of research and practice that support the strengths perspective are in the areas of developmental resilience, health and wellness, story and narrative and solution-focused approaches.
