Happy 136th Birthday to our man Morley! He's pictured here surrounded by his family at their home, Green Escape in Roslyn Estates. Swipe right to see a watercolor painting of his writing studio, The Knothole. The building currently resides in Christopher Morley Park and will be opened sometime in the future for visitors and educational programming.

Dr. Martin Luther King's many literary influences include our library's namesake, William Cullen Bryant. He quoted Bryant in several speeches, sharing the inspiring image of "Truth crushed to earth shall rise again" from one of the poet's later poems, The Battalion. 100 years ago today, our dear Mr. Morley sent this short letter to Harold Godwin, grandson of our namesake William Cullen Bryant. Godwin was a Bryant Library Trustee and was responsible for the Roslyn Paper Mill replica which remains standing today adjacent to the library in Gerry Park. The letter reads as follows:

Dear Mr. Godwin –

Thank you for your kind note.

I went to Messrs Doubleday, Page and Co. today  to get a copy of one of my books which I want to autograph to Bryant Library. And when Mrs. Morley and I get home from our trip, I should look forward to some real cooperation in your fine institution. The little visit there today was a delightful experience.

Sincerely yours,
Christopher Morley

Christopher Morley was born on May 5th, 1890 in Pennsylvania. He lived most of his adult life in Roslyn Estates where he and his wife Helen raised three children. Known for his best-selling novel, Kitty Foyle, as well as his role in founding The Book of the Month Club, he was a spirited writer whose work spanned all genres-- essays, poetry, plays, and fiction. We celebrate him on his 135th birthday as a local author whose influence on Roslyn remains to this day.
