90 Days: A Reflection
State Commander Paula Jansen looks back on the first 90 days of the new VFW year
The first 90 days of my term as the 2026-2027 VFW Department of California State Commander have been filled with non-stop experiences, memories, and achievements. Since my installation, it has been all hands on deck, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. As the State Commander, I have had the pleasure of seeing the extensive efforts of veterans across the state first-hand. I have seen individuals and groups work together to connect, to advocate, and to serve our communities. Throughout California, from north to south and east to west, I have seen us Going Over & Above Together.
What does “Going Over & Above Together” really mean?
It means recognizing the power in our numbers. It means using our different strengths to our advantages. It means collaborating with each other to achieve greatness. But more than anything, it means seeing the value in how we can excel beyond our expectations by joining forces and working towards a common goal.
Some notable achievements and events from the past 90 days:
California’s VFW National Legislative Team visited Washington D.C. where they advocated for H.R. 1845 — TAP Promotion Act and H.R. 9237 — Take Care of American Veterans Act, which supported written informed consent for veterans’ health care; and other priorities affecting those who served, those still serving, and their families. The team also witnessed a major development when the Major Richard Star Act discharge petition reached the required 218 signatures, an important procedural milestone toward House consideration.
VFW Leaders and members gathered on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Posts and Districts across the state held ceremonies and tributes to honor the 2,977 lives lost and remember the lasting impact of that day.
Over 60 Posts have already reached 90% and above in membership, making great progress towards the Department of California’s goal of 55,000 members by June 30, 2027.
VFW Department of California delegates from across the state attended the 127th VFW National Convention in Reno. They gathered to celebrate our veterans and connect with other VFW members from across the country. Attendees had the best time making memories and making their voices heard.
As State Commander, I made official visits to District 11, District 3, District 4, District 8 along with other members of the Department leadership team.
We held our annual POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony, followed by the State Commander Homecoming Gala at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

The VFW is only as strong as our members. Our organization thrives because of the efforts of individuals across California who are committed to a common goal. It is an honor to serve alongside every one of you.
The first 90 days have been busy, rewarding, and inspiring, and I intend to bring that same energy and commitment to every day of my term. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together this year and beyond.
