The bottom of this article addresses immunotherapy for pediatric cancers. Two points: (1) "[E]arly-stage studies suggest that [checkpoint inhibitors] may not be as effective as in adults" -- possibly because children's cancers tend to have fewer mutations. (2) CAR T-cell treatment "is being widely tested in children and has shown impressive effectiveness against acute lymphoblastic leukemia."

While confident that immunotherapy will play an increasing role in cancer treatment, researchers must overcome some obstacles.

As we begin September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, I feel sad and angry. In only the past few weeks I have learned about several kids who have gained their angel wings, and I can’t even imagine the pain the families are going through.

It is simply incomprehensible that childhood cancer research is not prioritized - only 4% of the NCI’s budget is directed to childhood cancer research. Yes, we’ve made some improvements, but no, the progress is not nearly sufficient. For many childhood cancers, we haven’t made any progress. Survival rates remain the same, and we are still using decades old drugs. The SAME toxic drugs used decades ago, are still being used TODAY. If you’ve witnessed a child suffer through months or years of treatment, you know how horrible the treatments are.

Yes, we’ve made the most “progress” in the treatment of the most common form of leukemia, but at what cost? With the increased survival rate has come a host of long-term side effects, many of which are life-threatening.

The frustrating, hard-to-swallow, fact is that we CAN unlock new, safer and more effective treatments if only we had sufficient funds for research — directed specifically toward childhood cancers.

A photograph of my folder from last month’s California Dialogue on Cancer Biennial Stakeholder Meeting in Sacramento. We forgot to get a group photo of our childhood cancer collaboration team (five organizations were represented) - so you get the folder instead! Now begins the five-year implementation of the childhood cancer objectives and strategies, including those related to awareness/research funding; quality of life issues; treatment summaries and survivorship care plans; awareness/education of primary care providers and school personnel regarding the unique needs of children with cancer; and the enrollment of adolescents in clinical trials. Looking for contacts in childhood cancer organizations in California. Please contact me for more info. and feel free to share! :). I believe we have our California COG hospital contacts. This is not intended to be any overwhelming obligation. :)

Good reminder about staying in hospitals -- The last few paragraphs are particularly interesting about reducing the infection rates.

Like most people, I had long heard about the dangers of contracting infections in hospitals. But I never took them seriously until I entered the world of the sick.

Ashleigh is starting a new chemo, as her cancer has spread - and in the meantime, she has put together a bucket list - Not something a 22 year old should have to do.

In case you missed this MLB news conference a few days ago.... So wonderful that Buster and his wife have stepped up to the plate to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer -- together with the Giants. It was his wife, Kristen, who met someone whose child (age 4) was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, and then learned of the lack of funding, and of the "torture" the kids go through with the cancer treatments. This inspired the Poseys to take up the cause with the Giants -- not just for one event, but over the long haul. In talking about their efforts, Buster was clearly broken up over what he has learned and witnessed in the hospital. We need more celebrities and athletes like the Poseys, who GET the lack of funding specific to childhood cancer research - and who GET how horrible it is for kids to suffer through brutal treatments. Thank you Buster and Kristen!

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants catcher Buster Posey and his wife, Kristen, announced plans Wednesday to spearhead efforts to raise money for research and awareness of pediatric cancer. Speaking to a throng of reporters before San Francisco's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Posey talked passionately…

Please send some good thoughts and prayers to Ashleigh and family as the doctors figure out what is going on in her lungs and figure out next steps! No family should have to go through this.....
