We were proud to stand behind her because she has a record of standing behind workers as we passed some of the most worker friendly legislation in Minnesota history.

Statement from Unions and Community Coalition on Proposed HealthPartners Purchase of Essentia

SAINT PAUL – Today it was announced HealthPartners will be attempting to acquire Essentia Health, the latest attempt at healthcare consolidation following the successful North Memorial/Sanford acquisition and the still-pending Allina/Sutter acquisition.

SEIU Healthcare MN & IA, Minnesota Nurses Association, ISAIAH, AFSCME Council 65, Healthcare For All MN, OPEIU Local 12 and more as part of the coalition pushing for Community Benefits Agreements who represents over one hundred thousand healthcare workers and community members across Minnesota, released the following statement regarding the news of a potential merger between Essentia and Health Partners:

“Today’s news feels a bit like groundhog day, with Minnesota healthcare workers and community members facing the fear of what could come from the latest potential healthcare consolidation. As with the other deals, workers are worried about cuts to jobs and services, and patients are worried about rising costs. These are real concerns for Minnesotans across our state, and we are once again calling on Attorney General Keith Ellison to use his power within the law to provide oversight into this proposed merger and ensure the interests of Minnesota’s workers and patients are protected.

“Our coalition was proud of the way we engaged with North Memorial and Sanford to get a binding agreement, and have been frustrated with Allina and Sutter’s lack of real engagement with us. We are hopeful that HealthPartners and Essentia will take the process seriously by engaging with workers and patients and sign a Community Benefits Agreement to guarantee in writing that Minnesotans aren’t hurt by this proposed acquisition.”

North Memorial and Sanford engaged with the community and Attorney General Keith Ellison and committed to a series of issues to ensure workers and patients weren’t left behind. So far Allina and Sutter have not been willing to agree to the CBA demands and Minnesotans are increasingly expressing concern about the deal.

Members of Local 12 who work as Paraeducators in Spring Lake Park Schools make school happen everyday! You can find our members in the classroom, media center, cafeteria, playground, hallway, office, and anywhere you’ll find students! Today they kicked off their campaign for a strong contract by connecting with community & caregivers and students left messages of support and appreciation for these big hearted school workers who show up everyday for the kids! Send them some love as they head into their first bargaining session this week 💪
