18 years ago today, I stood at the Military Entrance Processing Station and signed the dotted line to join the United States Army as an Artillery Cannon Crewmember. It feels like it was just yesterday, witnessing the tragedy of 9/11—a moment that ignited in me a deep passion and unwavering commitment to serve. That day forever changed my life, teaching me the true meaning of unity, tenacity, selfless service, and leadership.
Through two combat tours to Iraq, each lasting a year, I forged unbreakable bonds with my fellow soldiers, made lifelong friendships, and, heartbreakingly, lost too many along the way. Reflecting on those experiences reminds me that life doesn’t always bend in our favor, but it shows us just how strong we can be when faced with the most difficult challenges. In those moments, the true spirit of patriotism shines brightly, reminding us where the soul of this great nation resides.
More importantly, this journey has always reminded me of what we fight for—our families, the quality of life we cherish, and the ability to tuck our children in safely at night. I will always be grateful for the day I raised my right hand, and I am profoundly thankful for all who have served and continue to serve. We live in the greatest country on earth, and the freedoms we enjoy are preserved through the dedication and sacrifice of those in uniform.
Today, and every day, I honor that sacred commitment and the shared mission of protecting the values and prosperity we hold dear. To my brothers and sisters in arms—past and present—thank you for your service. You are what keeps this nation strong.
