Mission Statement:
To build on the strengths of refugee and immigrant communities and remove barriers to achieving economic, social, and cultural wellbeing. Organization Overview:
The Karen Organization of Minnesota was founded in 2008 by refugees from Burma. As the first Karen-led social service agency in the U.S., KOM is often consulted by Minnesota and statewide agencies to learn about how to b

est serve refugees from Burma. While most of our clients are from Burma, we also serve clients from areas including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Latin America who now live in the Twin Cities. KOM offers employment and financial coaching services, social services, community health, and youth development programs to over 2,000 refugees and immigrants each year. Most of our staff and board members are from the communities we serve, giving us a unique ability to provide culturally responsive services and keep pace with the community’s changing needs. KOM provides services to all refugees from Burma in Minnesota, as well as other immigrant and refugee communities. Although KOM was founded by members of the Karen community, we serve all ethnic groups from Burma, including Karen, Karenni, Mon, Chin and more. As a member of the State of Minnesota’s Refugee Resettlement Network, KOM supports refugees from numerous countries including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Latin America. KOM also welcomes diverse immigrants, refugees, low-income families and individuals, and English learners in our Career Pathways programs. KOM staff members speak English, Sgaw Karen, Pwo Karen, Karenni, Burmese, Thai, Hmong, Urdu, Dari, Pashto, and Spanish.

🎓 Congratulations to Hay Soe on graduating from Washington Technology Magnet School! 🎉

We are proud to celebrate this incredible milestone and all that Hay Soe has accomplished. As a dedicated participant in KOM’s Youth Program, she embraced new opportunities, built meaningful friendships, and continued to grow as a leader and student.

Reflecting on her experience, Hay Soe shared:
"My experience with the youth program has been great. It opened a lot of doors for me and I met a lot of new people."

As she prepares for college and pursues her dream of becoming a nurse, we know her future is bright. Join us in congratulating Hay Soe and wishing her success in this exciting next chapter! 💙

🌏Did you know? KOM serves new arrivals under humanitarian protection from around the world who have been in the U.S. for under 5 years.

KOM started in 2008, founded by Karen/Knyaw community members and allies, to support Karen refugee families newly arriving in Minnesota. The model was this: create a space where refugees were welcomed by staff who shared the same language and cultural background. With support from other well-established refugee resettlement programs, navigating the new environment alongside someone who went through the same refugee experience felt safe.

🗣“If there was no KOM, we’d face a lot of trouble. We’d be very miserable because we can’t speak English and we need help every month filling out forms, such as food stamps, medical insurance forms, paying bills. We’ve never seen such paperwork in our lives. We don’t have those kinds of things back in Burma or in the camps. When I arrived, I was told, ‘Do not worry. We’re here. You can call us anytime.’ That is great comfort for me and my family.” –Anonymous KOM client, 2011

Today, KOM carries that same model forward. Many of our programs have expanded to continue serving Karen families who have been in Minnesota more than 5 years. While the majority of our clients are from Burma, we have also grown to serve refugees and immigrants from around the world, including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Latin America who now live in the Twin Cities.

🤲Make an impact in your local refugee community today! Right now we are fundraising for our youth programs and the cost to maintain our two vans. Please give $25 to keep KOM rolling: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/NIZ3WXo3nMZ5JTS1WuyYeg

Today marks Juneteenth Freedom Day.💙🌟❤ The history and significance of Juneteenth connects to freedom, opportunity, and the experiences of immigrant and refugee communities in Minnesota.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, informing enslaved African Americans that they were free. This historic announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth is now celebrated as Freedom Day and serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality, justice, and opportunity for all.

This educational flyer was created by Dr. Jarrod Hall, our KOM Lead Mentor of the Family Education Supports program, to promote understanding, reflection, and community dialogue as we honor the past, celebrate the present, and build a stronger future together.🙌

Minnesota is home to the largest Karen community in the U.S. As of 2023, some of our Saint Paul Public Schools now offer Karen language courses for students, the first time in over 60 years that Karen language has been taught in public schools.🙌

In May, our youth visited Urban Roots at their Rivoli Bluff Farm and Restoration Site.🌱🪴 The students helped around the green house and spread mulch in the gardens. They learned about how the site used to be a garbage dump, and has been transformed into a community garden open to all in Saint Paul!🌤

Help our students to get to cool activities like these by giving $25 or more at https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/NIZ3WXo3nMZ5JTS1WuyYeg. These funds help with the cost of keeping our vans safe and fueled 🚐⛽

The first Karenni-owned grocery store in the Twin Cities was featured last Friday on KARE 11 News!❤️🥬 Hear from the owners of Karenni Grocery Store in their video interview about the importance of having a space for the community.
Minnesota is home to a growing Karenni community, one of the ethnic groups of Burma, also known as Myanmar, a neighbor to the Karen ethnic group. Read more about the ethnic groups from Burma in Minnesota, including the Karenni, on our website at https://mnkaren.org/history-culture/ethnic-groups/

For a little more than a year, Karenni Grocery Store has been offering more than just food for the community.
