UPDATE ON THE FIRE CATS🐾
Nearly two months after the house fire on April 8, cats are still being found.
Today, the Muskingum County Humane Society
took in another cat from the property after she was discovered hiding nearby. She has been named Meg and brings the total number of cats taken in from this situation to 49.
Since the fire, the Humane Society has cared for 43 adult cats and 6 kittens. Sadly, 8 cats were humanely euthanized due to severe health issues, and 1 cat passed away from an undetermined health condition.
Of the remaining cats, many have been given a second chance through rescue partnerships. PAWS of Muskingum County has helped place 7 cats, while other out-of-county rescue organizations have stepped in to help as well. Currently, 8 adult cats remain with the Humane Society, along with 3 adults and 6 kittens in foster care.
Before these cats are transferred to rescue organizations, the Humane Society has been covering the cost of their care, including spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and other necessary veterinary treatment. These expenses add up quickly when caring for a large number of animals, making community support more important than ever.
Cases like this are difficult and heartbreaking, but they also highlight the reality of animal rescue. One situation can quickly involve dozens of animals needing medical care, housing, food, and ongoing support. This is also an important reminder of why spaying and neutering matters. Preventing unwanted litters helps reduce the number of animals entering already overwhelmed shelters and rescues and can prevent situations from growing beyond what families are able to manage.
The Humane Society is still caring for many of these cats and could use the community’s support. Financial donations are greatly needed as medical and daily care expenses continue to add up. They are also running low on disposable gloves, trash bags, and canned cat food.

The Humane Society greatly appreciates the incredible donations that have already come in. At this time, the Humane Society has plenty of pop-up tents, cat beds, toys, and similar enrichment items.
Thank you to everyone who has fostered, adopted, donated, transported, groomed, volunteered, or otherwise supported these cats over the last several weeks. We are also grateful to our PAWS volunteers who also assisted in caring for many of these cats throughout this ongoing situation. The work continues, and every bit of help makes a difference.
