This World Environment Day, the message from scientists is clear: Earth’s climate system is becoming increasingly out of balance.

According to the World Meteorological Organization’s State of the Global Climate 2025 report, the years 2015–2025 were the eleven hottest years ever recorded. The report states Earth’s energy imbalance: the difference between the energy our planet receives from the sun and the energy it radiates back into space is now the highest in the 65-year observational record. This imbalance is being driven primarily by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.

Over 91% of that excess heat is being absorbed by the ocean. For the past two decades, the ocean has absorbed the equivalent of roughly eighteen times humanity’s annual energy use every year. Ocean heat content reached another record high in 2025, and the rate of warming has more than doubled since the early 2000s.

The impacts are already visible:

• Arctic sea ice reached its lowest or second-lowest annual extent on record in 2025.
• Antarctic sea ice recorded its third-lowest extent on record.
• Eight of the ten years with the greatest glacier ice loss have occurred since 2016.
• Global sea level is now approximately 11 cm higher than when satellite records began in 1993.
• Ocean acidification continues to increase, threatening marine ecosystems, fisheries, and food systems.

The consequences are not only environmental. The WMO highlights how rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, flooding, drought, wildfires, and storms are affecting food security, displacement, public health, and livelihoods around the world. Climate change is increasingly shaping where people can safely live, grow food, and access water.

Head to the and to hear more about how we can act faster against climate change, AND stick around here to see how we can also act locally here in the Hudson Valley.

Today is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, a day to recognize the thousands of military, police, and civilian personnel who serve in UN peacekeeping missions around the world.

Since 1948, UN peacekeepers have worked in conflict-affected regions to help protect civilians, monitor peace agreements, support humanitarian efforts, and assist communities recovering from violence and war. The day also honors those who have lost their lives while serving in pursuit of peace.

This year, we are highlighting Kristin Lund, who became the first woman to serve as Force Commander of a United Nations peacekeeping mission. Her appointment marked an important step toward greater representation of women in peace and security efforts and demonstrated the value of diverse leadership in peacebuilding.

Peacekeeping is one part of creating a more peaceful world. Lasting peace also requires education, dialogue, human rights, justice, environmental stewardship, and strong communities.

Today, we recognize those working to reduce violence and support peace around the world, while also reflecting on the role each of us can play in building more peaceful communities where we live.

Hudson Valley Gives “Giving Day” may be over, but there are still 10 days left to donate and support the creation of the Peace Museum & Learning Lab in Kingston.

Opening Summer 2026 at 730 Broadway, the Peace Museum is being built as a living community space rooted in peace education, environmental justice, creativity, dialogue, and collective learning.

The museum will include exhibitions, youth programming, workshops, film screenings, public conversations, art installations, a public reading room, and spaces for people to gather, learn, and imagine together.

At a time of increasing violence, disconnection, and environmental crisis, we believe spaces dedicated to empathy, education, creativity, and community care are deeply needed in the Hudson Valley.

Your support helps us continue building exhibitions, educational programming, and an accessible community space centered on peace and collective action.

Every donation, no matter the size, helps bring this vision to life.
