Happy Mother's Day 💐
The woman on the left is my mom, Julie. Cardiac nurse. Evansville, Indiana. Over 41 years of practice and just now thinking about retirement.
I was in grade school when I first shadowed her, watching her round on chest pain patients, move them into the cath lab, and work tirelessly on behalf of others on the worst days of their lives. I didn't know it fully then, but I was watching someone show me exactly what this profession could be.
I found my own path into nurse anesthesiology, but she was and has always been the inspiration.
This profession has been radically shaped by maternal figures. Alice Magaw, the "Mother of Anesthesia," practiced at my alma mater, Mayo Clinic, and set the standard for evidence-based anesthesia care, and left a lasting legacy.
I've also been blessed with amazing mentors and preceptors who gave me their time, their knowledge, and their belief before I had earned any of it. You know who you are.
To every mother, nurse, and CRNA who inspired someone without knowing it, thank you.
Happy Mother's Day, Momma King 👑
