Such a gift to hear reflect on their move “back” to Taiwan as Taiwanese Americans from .chang for All Things Considered.
“You give up so much when you decide to move to another country. There are certain jobs you'll just never have. You'll never have the language ability, can't quite read signs, can't quite understand the cultural references. You never quite feel like you belong. They gave up a lot psychically and emotionally so that children could integrate, master English, be better. And it's just a huge mental adjustment to be like, well, now my kids want to go back to the place that I left. Well, then why did I leave? You know, and none of this is articulated. This is - it's all below the surface.”

My heart is heavy today. Lee Teng-hui was one of my personal hero’s. A Taiwanese native who overcame the dictatorial Nationalist Party regimes of Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Ching-kuo, who dismantled authoritian rule and ushered in democracy to Taiwan. A fascinating and brilliant man. A true giant.

He bestowed to me my name Jia Tai li 泰 grand 麗 beauty when I met him with Senator Rockefeller during his presidency. Lee Teng-huiu was always supportive, kind, open, politically savvy, brilliant and funny.

While he honored me with my formal name he also had a special nickname he called me.

In 2005, when I worked for the Formosa Foundation, we invited Lee Teng-hui to be the keynote speaker at an event we hosted. No other groups wanted to help, as they were afraid to anger China. My colleague and dear friend Amy Lin along with Julie Lee and other members of the Foundation didn’t care and put the huge event together ourselves. The Chinese Ambassador personally threatened me, and other groups stood aside. I was spitting mad that others were not supporting the democratically elected former president of Taiwan.

However we stood up to the Chinese government, organized a amazing event and had a massive a turnout - all by ourselves.

Durning the dinner Lee Teng hui spotted me across the room and yelled at the top of his lungs “Wild Kingdom” “Wild Kingdom!!” My secret nickname reveled in front of hundreds of Los Angeles elite.

Lee Teng hui always called me Wild Kingdom - he said that I was ferocious and from the wilds of West Virginia. He thought it was funny and I always loved him for it. He was right on both counts.

Amy Lin, Julie Lee and I fought like Tigers for Taiwan, just like my hero Lee Teng hui fought for Taiwan’s democracy.

Generations to come in Taiwan 🇹🇼 have Lee Teng hui to thank for their freedom and their democracy. Rest in power dear sir.

Its first popularly elected president, he transformed a police state into a vibrant country while angering Beijing by insisting that Taiwan be treated as a sovereign state.

Hi everyone! During this year's FFAP, we'd like to welcome all former Ambassadors who are currently in the DC Metro Area to join us for dinner at Honey Pig and KTV at Cafe Muse on Saturday, June 21st! We can meet in the Rosslyn or Courthouse neighborhood of Arlington at 6:30pm, and drive over to Annandale from there. If you have a car and are willing to drive, please let us know! Otherwise, we'll rent a ZipCar or two. We'll arrive at Honey Pig by 7:00pm, and then head over to Cafe Muse for KTV by 9pm. If you haven't been, they have a great selection of Taiwanese songs!

I created a Facebook event for our reunion, so if you're planning on being in town and would like me to send you an invitation (so you can RSVP and receive all updates), please respond below!

Cheers,
Julia

Dear everyone,

As we watch recent events unfold in Taiwan, we have all been grappling with how we can support the Sunflower Movement. If you would like to reach out to members of Congress, please consider sending them this letter. I have worked on it in conjunction with allies in the United States and in Taiwan, and hope that it succinctly and clearly describes the situation in a way that also keeps in mind United States interests.

When writing your members of Congress, you may also wish to consider including some of these videos and articles (see below).

Warmest regards,

Julia Famularo
