🌱Harrison House garden highlight: lemon balm!

In 1800s New Jersey, lemon balm was a common fixture in kitchen and medicinal gardens, valued for both its pleasant citrus scent and practical uses.

It was often brewed into teas to ease digestion, calm nerves, and support sleep, reflecting its role in early herbal medicine traditions.

Households also used it to freshen rooms, flavor foods and drinks, and attract bees for pollination.

Thank you Montclair History Center for providing us with some lemon balm plants for our garden!

Meet the General this June as a living history reenactor steps into the boots of George Washington, bringing to life the moment he became Commander in Chief and the first name on the rolls of the United States Army.

In honor of June 14, experience the story behind the nation’s earliest flags, including the Grand Union Flag and the banner born from the Flag Resolution of 1777.

Hear how the Declaration of Independence was first read to the troops, and see history unfold through the eyes of the man who led it.

Today’s artifact highlight is….

Pauline Becker’s dresser from the 1920s!

This dresser was recently given to us by long-time Roseland residents, Jay and Barbara Giltzow.

Pauline was the wife of Gene Becker, who not only ran Becker Farm, but created the miniature railway that so many in town remember.

Thank you to the Giltzows for helping us preserve a piece of Becker history!

Harrison House garden highlight: lilacs!🪻

In 1800s New Jersey, lilacs were a familiar presence around farmhouses and village homes, often planted along fences or near front doors where their fragrance could drift indoors each spring.

Beyond their beauty, they carried symbolic meaning, commonly associated with first love, memory, and renewal, making them a thoughtful addition to family gardens and, at times, to burial grounds.

Hardy and easy to grow, lilacs became part of the rhythm of everyday life, marking the transition from winter to warmer months with their brief but memorable bloom.
