Bakers of the DC area: our next Baker Meet-Up is on the calendar! 🍞

Join Common Grain Alliance on Monday, September 14, from 6–8pm at Seylou Bakery & Mill for an evening of baking, sharing, and conversation around whole grains.

Bring a bread or baked good featuring whole grains or whole-grain flour, along with your questions, experiments, tips, and techniques. We’ll taste and talk about what makes whole-grain baking work—and what we’re still figuring out!

We’d also love for everyone to bring the recipe or formula for their bake so we can collect and share the recipes with the CGA baking community after the meet-up.

🌾 From Seed to Slice is coming to Virginia!

The Bread Bakers Guild of America is bringing its popular From Seed to Slice field trip series to the Shenandoah Valley—and this time, they’re stepping into the Mid-Atlantic grain network.

On September 22, bakers and grain enthusiasts will spend the day following grain through the regional system, with stops at three CGA member operations:

🌱 Mill Song Bakery — Nico Melas farms, mills, and bakes with grains sourced from the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
🚜 Hilltop Farms — Gary Knicely will share his work growing grain within resilient, regenerative farming systems.
🌾 Deep Roots Milling at Woodson’s Mill — Aaron Grigsby and Ian Gamble will open the doors to one of the region’s most important milling hubs, where grain from family farms across the Mid-Atlantic becomes flour for bakers throughout the region.

This is what a grainshed looks like in practice: farmer → miller → baker, connected by relationships, shared values, and a commitment to making regional grain work.

We’re especially excited to see the BBGA bringing its From Seed to Slice series into our region and introducing more bakers to the people and places building the Mid-Atlantic grain economy.

🌾 Four heritage grains. One dinner. A taste of what these heritage grains can do.

One of the most exciting parts of the Virginia Heritage Grain Project is discovering what happens when historic grain varieties leave the field and make their way into the hands of chefs, bakers, and distillers.

On August 27, Vault & Cellar in Middletown will showcase four grains currently being explored through VHGP:

🌽 Cocke’s Prolific Corn
🌽 Sea Island White Flint Corn
🌾 Red May Wheat
🌾 Rosen Rye

The dinner brings together several sides of the project’s work. Reservoir Distillery will showcase Virginia-grown grains in whiskey, while Chef Kari Rushing will incorporate the heritage grains into a four-course menu.

Chef Kari has been conducting culinary trials with VHGP grains for several years, helping us understand these varieties not just as historical curiosities, but as ingredients with distinctive flavor, texture, and culinary potential.

That kind of exploration is at the heart of VHGP: grow the grain, test it, taste it, and discover where it might have a place in today's Mid-Atlantic grainshed.

Small grains are some of the most powerful, overlooked levers in our food system. They build soil, support crop diversity, and create real opportunities for farmers to thrive. But none of that happens without a market.

At Common Grain Alliance, we connect the people who make regional grain possible — from farmers to millers, bakers, and brewers — because stronger connections are what turn good intentions into working systems.

It’s nutty, a little sweet, and behaves differently in the kitchen — but that’s part of the magic. In the field, einkorn offers farmers a way to diversify and build healthier systems with fewer inputs.

Join Common Grain Alliance for our next Baker Meet-Up, hosted by CGA member Mark Woodward and Jonathan Bethony of Seylou, for an evening of sharing bakes, swapping tips, and connecting over a shared love of grain and craft.

This time, we’re diving into the world of ancient wheats, including everything from einkorn and emmer to spelt, durum, and beyond. Whether you’re a home baker just starting to experiment or a seasoned pro refining your approach, this is a space to taste and talk shop with fellow grain lovers.
