Happy July, gardeners! Here are a few tips to keep your garden thriving through the long, sunny days:

• Summer can heat up the garden. When it’s hot out, water in the early morning. You’ll use less water and your plants will be able to drink throughout the day.
• Add mulch to help conserve water in the soil. Mulch can be wood chips, leaves or any material that covers the soil.
• Monitor tomatoes and squash for leaf diseases like powdery mildew. Plants need air flow between them to help prevent mildew.

Kids Can! Show kids how to harvest above-ground vegetables. Teach them to cut, twist or pinch. Never pull!

It's getting hot in here, and your garden may be feeling high summer temperatures. But what’s the science behind how heat waves affect plants in the garden? What are the signs of plant stress? Should I use my beach umbrella to shade my plants? And then there’s the big question: water in the morning or at night? So many questions, so little time when a heatwave is bearing down upon you and the garden. (And what happens when high heat and wildfire smoke combine? It’s called ozone damage. Double ugh.) OSU Extension Horticulture Agent Nicole Sanchez breaks it all down for you, with what to watch out for: leaf rolling, wilting, dry leaf edges, blossom and fruit drop, bolting, sunscald, and everyone’s least favorite, blossom end rot. But good news: appropriate water, mulch, shade, and sometimes even humidity, can help us all get through a heatwave.
