We want to share a new video that Jake put together about why Equine Assisted Learning matters — for Veterans and for our community here in Douglas County.

We are so grateful — especially that we connected with Dona last year, a military spouse who recently returned home to Douglas County after living in Colorado. She grew up here, and now she’s back — and she is truly a gem for us. She understands horses, and she understands Veterans. She has worked with them in the past, and that experience shows in the way she holds space and builds trust. Thank you, Dona, and to all your helpers 🙏

This program is also possible because of Darla, owner of Oak Meadow Arena , who makes her space available so this can happen. Having a resource like this in our rural community matters. It creates access where there otherwise wouldn’t be any.

And none of it happens without support. We’re thankful for Ride For 22 Oregon Chapter and Get Wet for a Vet, and the donors who continue to believe in this work.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are grateful for our community and how it shows up to support veterans.

A few weeks ago, we walked into a meeting with Ride For 22 Oregon Chapter without knowing what to expect. After the meeting, we left feeling completely humbled.

They surprised us with a donation to support our work with veterans—and shared that they had been “watching us.” We felt that it was more than a gift; it was a vote of confidence in the work we do, and a reminder that our community takes care of its own.

Ride For 22 Oregon Chapter advocates tirelessly for veterans, raising awareness about military PTSD and working to break the stigma that keeps many from seeking the support they need. Their mission is to reduce the tragic number 22—veteran suicides per day—by ensuring more veterans get the connection and care they deserve. Knowing that an organization so committed to veterans’ well-being believes in our work, it was really special.

That same morning, just hours before meeting with Ride for 22, Dona—who has been leading our equine-assisted learning program this summer—shared some great news: she had secured an arena so the program could continue through the winter.
For the veterans who participate, this program is a space for self-discovery, confidence, and healing. Horses respond to emotions we can’t hide, reflecting back what we might not see in ourselves.

Even with the arena secured, we still had to cover the costs, but just a few hours later, those challenges were solved thanks to Ride for 22. It felt like prayers answered. 🙏

Thank you to Ride for 22, and to everyone in our community who believes in this work. We couldn’t do it without you.

P.S. Our next Equine-Assisted Learning session is on December 13th. Check out our website for details!

Happy Veterans Day! 🇺🇸
We had a great time at the 70th Douglas County Veterans Day Parade — honoring service and history in our own creative way! Our float was inspired by Washington Crossing the Delaware River, blending modern and historical uniforms to celebrate 250 years of military excellence and the enduring spirit of those who serve.

Thank you all who joined, and thank you, Dustin Paul for the boat! North Umpqua Outfitters

We hadn’t shared this story yet — but it’s one we’re especially proud of. And it is time to tell you (sorry that it took us a while):

On July 18, 2025, veterans and community volunteers completed the rebuilding of Reynolds Shelter on Reynolds Ridge in the Umpqua National Forest. Across more than 500 volunteer hours, the crew worked side-by-side using traditional construction techniques—hauling heavy timbers, installing hand-split sugar pine shakes, and reviving skills that are rarely seen today.

Reynolds Shelter has a long history. First built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it provided refuge for hunters, backpackers, horseback riders, and families exploring the ridge for nearly a century. When it was lost to a human-caused fire in 2018, the community felt the absence deeply. The shelter was more than a structure; it was part of our shared outdoor heritage.

During the rebuild, volunteers met a family who had long ties to the ridge. One family member grew up in Roseburg and remembered hunting at Reynolds with his father, who first began visiting the ridge in the 1940s. Encounters like that — quiet, personal reminders of what these places mean — made the work feel especially important.

Led by a Navy veteran and U.S. Forest Service retiree, the crew combined experience, determination, and heart. The shelter’s timbers even included poles donated from the property of a WWII veteran and conservation legend Frank Moore, tying the project further into the story of stewardship across generations.

Now, Reynolds Shelter stands ready again to welcome travelers — a dry place out of the weather, a rest stop on a long ride, or a moment to pause and take in the forest. This project was more than construction: it was a gift from volunteers to the larger community, a tangible reminder that public lands belong to all of us and are worth the care and effort it takes to protect them.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of it! 🙏

Our Fall Gathering at Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park blessed us with beautiful weather — perfect for camping, spending time with horses during an equine-assisted learning session, and even a little gold panning in the creek (yes, we found gold! ✨).

We also enjoyed a forest walk and tour led by a forester, learning about traditional tribal practices for managing woodlands, and ended the day gathered around the campfire with chili cooked in a Dutch oven.

Each of these activities was led by veterans or military spouses — making it all the more meaningful to share their passions and skills with fellow brothers and sisters.

It’s about community and connection, and we’re so grateful for this amazing group of people who make it all possible.

We had such a great time at the annual Roseburg Blocktober Fest!

Our volunteers demonstrated traditional log hewing — and it quickly became a crowd favorite, even drawing in the little ones to watch the craft in action.

Events like this remind us how special it is to connect with our community — whether it’s a veteran who’s joined us for past outings, someone new just learning about what we do, our HealTerra customers, or fellow soil enthusiasts. 🌱

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and share your stories. We love being part of such a vibrant and supportive community!

And a big thank-you to the organizers of this event, including NeighborWorks Umpqua, for bringing our community together once again. 🙌
