Douglas Electric Cooperative (DEC) is a private, not-for-profit electric utility owned by the members it serves. It was established to provide its members with the most reliable electric service at the lowest possible cost. DEC's service area covers 2200 square miles in western and northern Douglas County, with small portions in northeast and southeast Coos County and south Lane County. A seven me

mber Board of Directors governing the cooperative is elected by and from its membership; therefore, the members ultimately control the cooperative. The Board meets monthly to set policies and review the operations of DEC. Its directors are elected at the Annual Meeting held each year on the first Saturday in April. Each director serves, without salary, a three year term. Nominations for election to the Board of Directors from each respective district are made by petition signed by 15 or more members who reside in that district and must be filed in DEC's headquarters at least 60 days prior to the Member Meeting. While each member owns the cooperative, no member shall be individually liable or responsible for any debts or liabilities of the cooperative.

We found this old lantern tucked away at the Douglas Electric office. Based on its design, it dates back to the 1950s.

At some point, a Douglas Electric lineman carried this light through a storm on a dark night in Lookingglass, Melrose, Elkton, or one of the many communities we serve. Long before GPS, smartphones, bucket trucks, and LED work lights, this lantern helped crews find broken lines and restore power to waiting families.

It’s also interesting to think that 70 years from now, a future Douglas Electric GM might be holding an old iPad or drone and wondering about the storms it saw and the people who used it. The tools change. The mission doesn’t.

For nearly 90 years, Douglas Electric employees have answered the call when members needed them most. This old lantern is a reminder of that legacy.

Happy National Electricity Day!

More than 270 years ago, Benjamin Franklin helped us better understand electricity. Today, it's hard to imagine life without it. From powering our homes and businesses to keeping us connected, electricity is part of nearly everything we do.

At Douglas Electric Cooperative, we're proud to provide safe, reliable power to the communities we serve. Thank you to all the linemen and staff who work every day to keep the lights on!

Yes, it's AI. No, that's not what I look like.

But one thing in this picture is 100% real:

You own Douglas Electric.

Not Wall Street. Not some distant corporation. People in Elkton, Camas, Lookingglass, Reedsport, Tenmile, Yoncalla, Rice Hill, and on YOUR road.

You.

We are proud of it! We hope you are too! (Caption was created by a real live human!)

Power has been restored, thank you for your patience.

8:45PM - Approximately 300 members are currently without power in the area from east of the Elkton Tunnel on Highway 38 to just outside of Drain.

The outage was caused by a traffic accident involving a vehicle and one of our utility poles.

Emergency responders are on scene, and once the area has been secured and is safe for our crews and those involved in the accident, we will begin restoration efforts as quickly as possible. At this time, we do not have an estimated restoration time.

We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
