Through language, art, and tradition, Tribal Nations keep cultural knowledge alive and strengthen the communities around them.

In Washington, the Community Accelerator Grant, funded by Allen Family Philanthropies and administered by ArtsFund, has directed unrestricted funding to a range of Tribal Nations for their cultural departments, language programs, and museums.

Our Natural Climate Solutions partners put Indigenous practices to work restoring forests, prairies, rivers, and coastlines; from cultural fire in British Columbia to seaweed farming in Alaska.

Across the state, land and culture are stewarded by the Tribes who have always called this place home. We celebrate them on and every day.

To better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in Washington, we partnered with SMU DataArts to analyze three years of data from organizations funded through the ArtsFund Community Accelerator Grant.

This report examines funding access, financial health, organizational capacity, and community impact across Washington’s arts ecosystem.

What a joy it’s been to share Seattle with the world. The global spotlight may have moved on, but Seattle’s cultural story is still unfolding.

Across downtown, organizations including SIFF, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Symphony, Friends of Waterfront Park, Theatre Off Jackson, Base Camp Studios, Common AREA Maintenance, and Shunpike are creating accessible cultural experiences, supporting artists, and helping keep downtown vibrant and welcoming. Do you know your county's arts vibrancy?

An important piece we considered when developing the RFP for our Creative Youth Development funding opportunity was how to reach a greater spectrum of organizations in more rural parts of Washington state. This included counties that have a higher potential to increase arts vibrancy (defined as counties that fall below 50% on the SMU DataArts Cultural Vibrancy Index).

The Cohort:
Hilltop Artists (Pierce County)
Mi Chiantla (Grays Harbor and Pacific County)
Spark Central (Spokane County)
Schack Art Center (Snohomish County)
The Bridge Music Project (Grays Harbor and Lewis County)
Little Theatre of Walla (Walla Walla and Columbia County)
UTOPIA Washington (King, Pierce, and Thurston County - serving q***r and trans Pacific Islander youth)
Whatcom Family Ymca (Whatcom County)
Young Women Empowered (Y-WE) (King County)
The Mockingbird Society (across WA state)

Over the next three years, these organizations will be funded by the foundation to also participate in a learning cohort, working alongside one another to strengthen their programs, share what they’re learning within a strong network of support, and continue deepening CYD as a practice in Washington state.

Creativity is where young people find their voice— when they are engaged in what they care about, they build confidence, connection, and a sense of agency.

Creative Youth Development (CYD) puts that into practice—embedding hands-on arts and creative work into youth programs so young people can build skills, support their wellbeing, and show up in their communities.

This $5 million in funding for 10 organizations across 11 Washington counties will support transformational programming and is the state’s largest, single-investment into community-led, out-of-school-time CYD for youth.
