Organizations that offer services to unhoused clients do important work in our communities. People that are unhoused can be very vulnerable due to their experiences. When working with a vulnerable population, it can be challenging to recruit and retain staff, keep up with various crisis situations, and navigate a complicated world to help clients get the care they need.

Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, refers to traumatic experiences that a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examined in relation to a number of negative mental and physical health outcomes in adulthood. These adversities have been linked to several major public health concerns that impact our communities every day.

Community partners and local agencies are key stakeholders for finding solutions and implementing change that can reduce the prevalence of ACEs in our communities and mitigate the impacts of trauma. It can be difficult to explain the impacts trauma to a young person. Whether they are currently going through a difficult time, or they are experiencing the impacts of trauma, youth might have a lot of questions on why these experiences are impacting them.

Join us on Thursday May 9th from 11:30AM-1:00PM at Aviva Health's Willamette Conference Room to learn more about Outdoor Events & Spaces in our community.

As we get closer to the summer months, there will be more opportunities for people to get outside and attend the various community events that happen in our county! This month, we have created a panel of professionals in our communities that work in whole-person wellness, utilizing community spaces, and host several events in the community for people to enjoy. Our panel is made of professionals from ODHS, Thundering Waters, Source One Serenity, and the YMCA.

We will be learning more about these agencies and the opportunities for people to get outdoors, as well as the importance of outdoor activities for health and well-being and building a strong community.

Join us for April's Lunch, Learn & Connect!

We will be at Aviva Health on Thursday April 11th from 11:30AM - 1:00PM.

Since April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, we have Sarah Wickersham the Executive Director and Tami Terry the Deputy Director of Douglas CARES, presenting on how our county responds to child abuse and how our communities can foster prevention. Douglas CARES is Douglas County's Child Advocacy Center and they provide essential services to our community to keep kids safe: behavioral health, forensic interviewing, family support, and more. Sarah will be giving an overview of the data around child abuse in Douglas County, explaining the child abuse response systems, and how agencies can collaborate in prevention activities.

Over the last few years, we have trained thousands of people in our region on the impact of adverse childhood experiences and resilience. As a collaborative, we strive to create a more trauma-informed community for our youth and families.

Join us for our Lunch, Learn & Connect on Thursday March 14th, 2024 at Aviva Health from 11:30AM-1:00PM to learn more about De-escalation skills from our amazing partners at South Umpqua School District.

We will have Rick Burton, Ryan Jephson, and Allen Sjogren from South Umpqua School District presenting on de-escalation skills and strategies when encountering dysregulated youth. People can become dysregulated when overwhelmed, experiencing adversity, have difficulty self-regulating, and many other contributing factors. Our presenters will provide attendees with a basic understandings of de-escalation that can be applied to youth, parents, community members and more.
