πŸ“šπŸ’™ Supporting Early Childhood Literacy in Roscommon County! πŸ’™πŸ“š

At this week's Rotary meeting, we were honored to welcome Michelle Ewald and Nancy Smitz from the Roscommon County Literacy Council (RCLC), who shared exciting updates about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program and the incredible impact it continues to have on local families.

The program currently serves a record-breaking 640 children in Roscommon County, providing free, age-appropriate books mailed directly to children each month to help foster a lifelong love of reading. Michelle and Nancy also unveiled the organization's brand-new logo, designed by an intern, with new shirts and promotional materials coming soon!

The RCLC's annual book sale will take place during the Roscommon Craft Fair weekend, featuring rooms dedicated to used books, new books, and high-quality used books. All proceeds from the sale support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

The program operates on a monthly budget of approximately $1,300–$1,500, with 99% of funds going directly to support the Imagination Library. Funding comes from grants, fundraisers, and generous donations from local businesses and community members. They are actively seeking additional business and corporate sponsors to help sustain and grow this valuable program.

As part of our commitment to supporting literacy and education in our community, the Houghton Lake Rotary Club was proud to present a $1,500 check to Michelle and Nancy to support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

Thank you to the Roscommon County Literacy Council for the important work you do to inspire young readers throughout our community!

Houghton Lake Public Library has Hooked on Phonics kits available to be checked out. These kits are great for helping children who are starting to learn to read, those who may need a little extra support, or even for getting a bit of a head start on literacy skills.
The kits include numbered lessons and notes to help parents and caregivers work step by step with their child to build their skills, as well as books that accompany the lessons. These phonics kits not only help children learn to read, but they also help adults gain knowledge and skills to better assist growing readers, and are a great way to spend quality time together.
Funding for these kits is provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library of Michigan.
