Spending time outdoors, especially in free play, benefits children's physical health, social skills, and even their concentration and school readiness.

MSU Extension offers a free online series: Extension Extras.
On Tuesday, October 6, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m., the topic is the Importance of Outdoor Play.

Parents and providers will learn: Why structured outdoor play is important; what to do to increase the interest of kids who are reluctant to go outside; how to make the playground experience more meaningful; and techniques for engaging and responsive interactions between provider and child.

October 4-10 is Banned Books Week. This year, the theme is “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.”

According to The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF), 5,668 titles were banned from libraries in 2025, with access to an additional 920 books restricted. This is both the highest number of titles censored in one year and the highest rate of challenges resulting in censorship since OIF began compiling censorship data in 1990.

The Parent Talk System from MSU Extension:
Do you feel like the children in your care aren’t listening to you? Do you find yourself constantly repeating yourself trying to gain compliance? This 6-week series is for parents and caregivers of children of all ages and is designed to improve communication and provide practical verbal strategies for raising confident, caring, responsible children. Topics include eliminating unwanted behavior, setting limits, teaching about consequences, giving effective feedback, promoting independence, and developing character.
