SJC @ 50: Korean Americana, Part Three: A Day at Camp

Every morning at camp starts in the classroom. Campers split up by age for Korean language, culture, and Reflection, where counselors lead open conversations about growing up Korean American.

Then everyone heads to Frehse Hall where the energy picks up. In Part Three, former Director Doug Kim takes us from morning classes through Music, Space Ghost, Green Hornet, and ChinguGrams, and explains why the serious parts and the ridiculous parts work so well together.

After breakfast, capers, and cabin clean-up, morning classes begin. Principally arranged by age into junior, intermediate, and senior groups, campers circumambulate the campus for sessions in Korean…

Fifty one weeks a year, a lot of our kids are the only Asian face in the room. For one week, they are the majority.

In Part Two, former Director Doug Kim lays out the three things camp has always done, whether anyone planned it or not: put kids in the majority, surround them with role models who look like them, and send them home with what he calls cultural body armor.

What a week! 🙌

SJC has wrapped up its 51st year and we still can’t believe it’s over already. This year we introduced new electives, witnessed fierce tug-of-war battles, and had one of the best skit nights in recent memory. We welcomed over 20 new campers and said goodbye (for now) to some lifelong SJC alumni. Whether it was your first year at camp or 10th, thank you all for making it so special.
