Robert and Pauline Lawhorn
Robert and Pauline Lawhorn were well known throughout the Stateline area for their love of history, community involvement, and dedication to preserving the past. Together they shared a passion for collecting, education, and historical preservation, leaving a lasting legacy that continues through the collections they donated and the memories they created.
Robert Franklin Lawhorn (1924-2026)
Robert "Bob" Lawhorn was born in Somonauk, Illinois, in 1924. As a young boy he lived at the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School in Normal, Illinois, after being orphaned. He later came to Roscoe, where he was welcomed into the home of Kay and Allie McCurry, whom he lovingly regarded as his aunt and uncle. He graduated from Hononegah High School in 1943 before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During his military service he served during both World War II and the Korean War.
Following his return home, Bob married Dorsey Powell. Together they raised her son, Gary. After Dorsey's death from cancer in the late 1960s, Bob eventually found companionship again with Pauline, whom he married in June 1969.
Bob possessed a lifelong fascination with aviation and history. An accomplished pilot, he was an initial investor and shareholder in Cottonwood Airport in Rockford, Illinois, and remained active in aviation circles for many years.
He was also an avid collector and local historian. Over the course of his life he gathered and preserved countless historical artifacts, recognizing the importance of safeguarding local heritage for future generations. Many of the artifacts from his collection have found a permanent home at the Roscoe Township Historical Society, where they will continue to educate and inspire visitors.
Pauline Patrick Lawhorn (1929-2021)
Pauline Patrick was born in 1929 and graduated from Rockford East High School before continuing her education at Rockford College. She first married Stanton Phelps and became the mother of two children, Robert "Bob" Phelps and Judie Phelps Heinschel.
A gifted educator, Pauline taught for many years at Rockton Grade School, where she was remembered for her dedication to her students and her enthusiasm for learning. Beyond the classroom, she cultivated a deep appreciation for interior design, sewing, and fashion history.
After retirement, Pauline devoted herself to collecting historic clothing and accessories. Her remarkable collection eventually grew to more than 500 pieces of vintage apparel. She became well known for her engaging vintage fashion shows, during which she shared the stories, styles, and social history behind the garments. Bob was a willing and enthusiastic participant in these presentations, often helping bring history to life for audiences throughout the region. A number of Pauline's carefully curated garments are now preserved in the collections of the Roscoe Township Historical Society.
A Shared Legacy
Together, Bob and Pauline Lawhorn dedicated themselves to preserving history in both large and small ways. Whether through Bob's collection of local artifacts, Pauline's preservation of historic clothing, their participation in community organizations, or their willingness to share their knowledge with others, they enriched the cultural heritage of northern Illinois.
Their contributions continue to benefit researchers, museum visitors, and local residents, ensuring that the stories of earlier generations remain accessible for years to come. Through the collections they assembled and the lives they touched, Robert and Pauline Lawhorn helped preserve an important part of the history of Roscoe and the surrounding Stateline region.
