Green River – Battenkill Tributary
2026 Floodplain Reconnection Project

Have you ever seen a streambank on your local river that looked like this and wondered what could be done? Our team here at TU loves the chance to reconnect cold flowing rivers to their natural meandering ways. However, it takes a considerable amount of research and the financial support of local partners. Deeply eroded banks with large fallen trees like you see in this photo tell us quite a lot about the general health of that stream. When rivers are unable to expand naturally to let high flows soak the surrounding fields and meadows, they create fast moving channels and unstable banks conditions that become increasingly dangerous to residents and recreationalists. However, it’s not too late!

Trout Unlimited’s upcoming flood plain reconnection project shown here on the Green River was made possible with funding provided by Watersheds United Vermont, through the VT Clean Water Initiative Program. These funds have helped to support significant project development and design work on the Vermont side of the Battenkill Watershed already and will be put on the ground through three restoration projects in 2026.

Stay tuned right here for more on those upcoming projects in the weeks ahead!

Hello UDR Anglers and River Watchers!

The Cannonsville Reservoir is at 96.1% capacity and has entered an FFMP storage zone (L1b) that triggers increased releases for flood mitigation purposes (prevents reservoir spilling) and protecting downstream communities. The release at Cannonsville is now 600 cfs and will likely increase soon as the reservoir continues to fill up. We will keep you posted on further changes!
