“Some moms count surgeries. I don't have the luxury of being one of those moms.” -Chaney, Wish Mom
From the time Keira was a baby, surgeons and therapists have worked just to shift her legs so she can sit in a wheelchair. Born with a rare and severe musculosketal disease, her muscles are extremely weak and her joints can neither fully bend or straighten.
Keira experiences the outside world mostly from her window, but she and her mom started to think of her wish possibilities by identifying what brings her joy… the feel of the sun on her face, the motion of trees waving in a storm, but the real joy comes when the birds visit their feeder. “It’s very calming to her, to just be near the birds,” her mom said.
For her wish, she wished to turn her backyard into a sanctuary - a safe space to explore in her wheelchair, swing side-to-side, listen to the wind chimes, and most importantly draw in the birds with a bath and feeders.
As a single mom with two adopted daughters, Chaney focuses so much on care, she doesn’t have as much time to plan unique experiences and joy-filled moments. “This is invaluable for her to come out here, to breathe fresh air, and to do something different – something she loves,” said Chaney.
