Nursing is hard. Not “busy” hard. Not “long shift” hard. Sometimes mentally, emotionally, and physically overwhelming hard.

I think people outside of healthcare often celebrate nurses without truly understanding the intensity of what many of us carry every day. The responsibility. The constant pressure. The staffing issues. The families. The emergencies. The charting. The feeling that you can never fully shut your brain off.

Some days you leave feeling proud. Other days you leave completely drained wondering how this became normal.

And despite all of that, nurses still show up. Still advocate. Still comfort people during some of the worst moments of their lives.

I think nurses deserve more honesty about this profession. Not just praise during “nurses week,” but real conversations about burnout, stress, mental health, and the pressure so many are under every single shift.

To the nurses struggling lately: you are not weak, and you are definitely not alone.

I am announcing the dissolution of the Long Island Nurses Non-Profit Organization due to our inability to secure grants since 2021. Despite hosting small-scale fundraising events, we were only able to raise approximately $500. As the sole operator of the non-profit, I have been responsible for covering the costs of annual accounting services. Nevertheless, I am proud to report that we successfully allocated roughly $28,000 in grants that went toward gift cards, the Long Island Nurses Extravaganza in 2021, and scholarships. Our efforts were instrumental in supporting nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the organization is ceasing operations, our private FB group with over 7500 nurses will remain active as a platform for discussion and job postings. Furthermore, we will be awarding small scholarships totaling $300 from our remaining funds, and I encourage you to stay tuned for more information. I extend my sincerest gratitude to everyone involved.

There are 23,000 nurses on Long Island and we have 7000 members in the Long Island Nurses Private FB Group That’s almost 30% of the nurses on LI! We are so proud and thankful for each and every nurse on Long Island!

Andrea was a supporter of Long Island Nurses and a wonderful friend. She tragically passed giving birth to her twin daughters. She leaves behind a 3 year old son as well.

Congratulations to our $700 Susan Friedlieb RN scholarship recipient Brenae Lucas!
There were three other applicants who will receive a $100 dollar mini scholarship in memory of Michelle Tschampion RN.

Both Susan and Michelle were dedicated and wonderful nurses. Their memory will live on through all of us.
