Thanks to the combined efforts of our Romulus Police Department and Romulus Fire Department, and through the support of our Foundation, we're proud to share that Frontline Strong Together ( www.FST5.org ) is now an active partner within our public safety divisions.

FST5 is a mental health program that was built specifically for first responders, by first responders. They offer confidential support, peer-to-peer connections, access to culturally competent mental health professionals, and 24 / 7 resources tailored to the realities of first responders.

This is more than just implementing a program, it's a lifeline. The city's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is another great option, but it's not staffed with first responders who know first-hand what our police and fire experience, like FST5. And that's a clear message: it's okay to not be okay, you don't have to carry it alone.

So during the month of May, Mental Health Awareness Month, the Romulus Public Safety Foundation stood side by side with our Police and Fire Departments to focus on something we don't talk about nearly enough: mental health.

Our first responders are the people we call on in our worst moments. But where do they turn when they need help? The truth is, many don't.

Not because they don't feel it, but because of the stigma. Because somewhere along the line, they might have heard, "tough it out." That's stigma. To "stay strong." Stigma. To not let it show. Stigma. But it doesn't disappear because we don't talk about it. It doesn't just fade away because we bury it. Behind that patch, is a human.

That's why this month, we made a commitment: to listen, learn, and advocate. To help break the stigma and do more. As a result, our first responders now have more options suited specifically for them.

To every police officer, firefighter, dispatcher, medic, and responder in our city:

Real strength is knowing when to reach out.

We see you. We thank you. And we will keep working to listen, learn, and advocate - for you.

FST5 is here to help first responders. It provides live support for work-related mental health challenges.

While many enjoy backyard barbecues and long weekend road trips, there are two groups of heroes we pause to honor and thank today.

First, we remember the courageous service members who gave their lives defending the freedoms we cherish. Their sacrifice is the reason we can gather in peace, and their legacy lives on in every act of freedom we enjoy.

Second, we recognize the first responders who never clock out. While others rest, they remain on duty; answering calls, protecting lives, and keeping our community safe around the clock.

At the Romulus Public Safety Foundation, we honor those who served, remember those we’ve lost, and thank those who continue to stand on the front lines every day.

Your service, past and present, makes our freedom possible.

Shout out to Lt. Smith for representing your RPD so well!
The mayor received an email from a grandmother who is new to the city. In it she said, "I was at the park (in her apartment complex - when Lt. Smith came through) My grandson said, 'hello." Much to the surprise of both myself, my grandchild, and others, he stopped and got out of his patrol car... He not only talked to my grandson, but he showed him how the horn, lights and siren on the patrol car operated...; they also took pictures. The officer was kind, warm and very approachable. I thank you for employing such an individual. This gave the connection between us and law enforcement..." Thank you to Deidre for passing this on and welcome to Romulus!
