Registration for 4-H Camp Closes this Weekend - Registration Open for 4-H Members and Non-Members - Scholarships Available

The West Virginia 4-H Camping Program has provided youth members with opportunities for four-fold life development (Head, Heart, Hands, Health) through cooperative group living in the natural environment since 1915. 4-H camping provides participants with a safe and secure environment, both physically and emotionally. 4-H camping promotes appreciation for the outdoors and teaches environmental stewardship.

Campers are taught personal life skills and values, including fairness, caring, citizenship, trustworthiness, respect, and responsibility. 4-H camp provides opportunities for participants to learn and practice leadership, practice decision making and promote teamwork through group activities. Camp fosters the development of positive relationships between youth and adults who serve as positive role models, teachers and mentors.

Hampshire County 4-H Camp will take place June 7-11, 2026 (Sunday - Thursday) at Hampshire Park on South Branch River Road. Cloverbud Day will take place on June 9th. 4-H camp transforms lives, and we hope that you will be a part of this yearโ€™s 4-H camping experience.

Local 4-Hโ€™ers Gain Life Skills Through Horse Judging and Hippology

West Virginia University - Hampshire Countyโ€™s 4-H Horse Judging team members gain valuable life skills by participating in 4-H horse judging.

Two junior 4-H teams represented Hampshire County at the state competition over the weekend. Junior 4-Hโ€™ers participating in judging and hippology this year were: Elizabeth Alkire, Annalise Dillon, Lily Rothgeb, Lakyn Smith, Sterling Dillon, Adrasteia Wilson, and Australis Wilson. Many of the youth members placed in the top five of several of the categories.

A special thank you to Sarah and Shane King who served as the 4-H volunteer coaches for this yearโ€™s teams. Thanks to 4-H teen leader Natalie Gochenour who assisted. Another special thank you to the parents that supported these participants in their horse judging endeavors.

4-H horse judging is designed to provide members with the opportunity to develop important life skills such as critical thinking, leadership, teamwork, evaluation, communications, and decision-making. Youth participants are also trained to: recognize good conformation (structural correctness, balance, and muscling), breed character, and performance ideals in different breeds of horses; b) select and evaluate horse based on knowledge and fact, make a decision, and then defend their decision through oral reasons; c) learn equine terms which can be used in a logical, systematic way to defend their placing and d) build self-confidence and self-reliance by learning to speak clearly, decisively and convincingly through the presentation of oral reasons.
