💙💛 Celebrating DeafBlind Awareness Week! 💙💛

We’re proud to share GVRA’s recognition of DeafBlind Awareness Week and highlight the importance of communication, accessibility, and independence for individuals who are DeafBlind!

At the Northwest Georgia Center for Independent Living (NWGA CIL), accessibility isn’t just something we talk about. It’s something we practice every day!

We are proud to have a staff member who is DeafBlind, and members of our team are knowledgeable in tactile American Sign Language (ASL), helping support inclusive communication.

Our Assistive Technology (AT) Lab offers opportunities to explore and learn about technology that promotes greater independence, including:

🔹 Refreshable Braille displays and screen readers

🔹 Braille instruction and accessible communication tools

🔹 Captioning and accessibility applications

🔹 Training on assistive technology and mobile apps

🔹 Alerting systems that use vibrations or flashing lights

🔹 Telecommunications technology, including amplified telephones and TTY devices

🔹 Adaptive computer software and other accessibility solutions

These technologies help individuals who are DeafBlind communicate, access information, connect with others, and navigate daily life with greater independence.

DeafBlindness does not mean a lack of ability or possibility. It means recognizing that communication and accessibility may look different for everyone!

At NWGA CIL, we believe everyone deserves access, opportunity, and the freedom to live independently.

Governor Brian P. Kemp has proclaimed October 18–24, 2026, as DeafBlind Access and Opportunity Week in Georgia!

As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we also recognize the valuable talents, contributions, and economic impact of DeafBlind individuals. This observance highlights the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all.
