Unlike most American kids, 12-year-old Robert Wada participated in Boy Scouts behind a barbed wire fence at the Poston concentration camps in Arizona during World War II.

Wada and his family were among the more than 120,000 Japanese American people, most of them United States citizens, uprooted from West Coast regions during World War II after President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942.

Under the constant gaze of armed guards, inmates started schools, newspapers, sports teams, theater groups, and other civic organizations.

When Wada and other boys at Poston decided to establish a Boy Scout troop, they designated themselves as “Troop 100” to honor the 100th Infantry Battalion, a U.S. combat unit comprised of mostly second-generation Japanese Americans. In this Boy Scout uniform in our National Museum of American History, Wada went camping, earned merit badges, and participated in parades honoring American soldiers departing for World War II.

As an adult, Wada enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and served as a tank crewman during the Korean War. He proudly participated in veterans' organizations until his death in 2023.

Troop 34 has always supported the historically strong ties between Scouting and the US military. I received this text from one of our Eagle Scouts who is now proudly serving in the US Army. Scouting teaches many things..this is another example.
We are very very proud of this young man!

I’ve learned one thing about rangers is that every single first impression is that they are As****es and Prideful but you know them for long enough and just do the right thing and they will teach you a lot they LOVE to teach people as long as you don’t mind a little exercise with it. He taught us a class on knots the other day and I excelled he asked if I was a Boy Scout. Everyone was doing pushups because they couldn’t tie their knots to the time limit and the only knot I didn’t make time on believe it or “knot” is the square knot because he gave us 30 seconds and I completed it in 5 but 10 seconds before time was up he said to do the safety knots as well. I owed 25. But I tied the incline bowline in time (with safety knots) and also the Swiss harness (also w safety’s). He had me teaching all the people who were having troubles

It is time for Troop 34's 8th weeklong trip to Ossabaw Island, Ga. The wildest place you've never been!
Come join us as we make our 8th trip to this amazing island! Ferry over by boat and leave civilization behind, as you camp under the shade of massive Live Oaks and a canopy of Spanish Moss! Explore 11 miles of beach and have it entirely to yourself! Learn about, and explore salt marsh, and maybe have a mud battle! See Loggerhead Sea Turtles lay eggs at night, and get to know the local alligator population! We will teach you how to throw a cast net, pull a seine thru coastal creeks, and run crab traps!
You will have guidance on the island from a professionally trained naturalist that knows the coastal ecosystem, and there will be plenty of time to explore on your own as well. We hope that thru daily, short lessons about the island, we can instill a love for the coast! This is truly a "once in a lifetime" opportunity, as access to Ossabaw is not easy to do. You will be amazed at what coastal Georgia has to offer. This is open to NWGA registered council scouts and leaders only and we only have a limited number of openings.
The cost at this point, for the week, will be $595.00. This includes food, boat rides to and from, camping fees and some limited transportation on the island. Although we move a lot of gear, it is not a "backpacking" trip. We are allowing some money for inflation, and hope to drop that amount.
