SSWIM Spotlight Series: Part 6 🦉

Wrapping up our SSWIM Spotlight Series, Floyd CCA Non-Migratory Birds earned the Habitat Award and a $1,000 prize for their project!

Their team focused on protecting and supporting local bird populations through habitat restoration, environmental education, and community outreach.

Students installed and monitored birdhouses and feeders, planted native trees and plants to attract birds, created plant identification cards, distributed seed bombs throughout their school community, and worked to prevent bird collisions with windows on campus.

The Habitat Award recognizes the team that most embodies the spirit of transformation in their project. Whether through physical restoration, cultural revitalization, or educational outreach, the team that wins the Habitat Award turns challenges into opportunities and creates something impactful.

Award funding will be reinvested into the school’s STEM and science programs to continue encouraging environmental stewardship and hands-on learning for future students.

WEEK 2 Swim Guide results are LIVE — the weekly water quality update from 29 swimming and boating spots across the upper Coosa River Basin, from Weiss Lake to Lake Allatoona. 💧

We test for E. coli, a key indicator of bacteria pollution.

If a site fails, it means E. coli levels exceeded the EPA’s threshold of 235 MPN/100ml - increasing the risk of illness for swimmers.

Find out which sites failed and which are good to go before you hit the water:

Quick Reminders:
We experienced very heavy rain this past week and all sites are natural bodies of water. Bacteria levels can change quickly, especially after storms. Always swim at your own risk and stay water-aware.

SSWIM Spotlight Series: Part 5 💧

The Adairsville Greenkeepers received the Pioneer Award and a $1,000 prize for their project!

Manning Creek, a waterway near their school, receives excess runoff from construction and agricultural activities. They were concerned about eutrophication due to the elevated nutrient levels in the water. Their team designed and studied a floating island system that uses natural filtration methods to help improve the water quality.

The island consisted of bamboo, chicken wire, jute string and plants, which served to filter excess runoff and nutrients.

By combining environmental science with creative problem-solving, students explored innovative ways to support healthier aquatic ecosystems and reduce pollutants in local waterways.

The Pioneer Award recognizes projects that bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions, and this project stood out for its unique approach.

The prize funding will be reinvested into the school’s STEM and science programs, helping support future learning experiences for students.

SSWIM Spotlight Series: Part 4 🐠

The Darlington Green Team earned the Ecosystem Award and a $1,000 prize for their project!

Their project focused on understanding fish biodiversity and ecosystem health in Silver Creek through hands-on field research and water-quality analysis. The students partnered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and The Nature Conservancy to conduct a creek sampling day, during which they measured species richness and diversity and analyzed macroinvertebrates.

Beyond research, the team also participated in outreach efforts to educate others about watershed health and the protection of aquatic ecosystems. These efforts included hosting a student stream cleanup on Silver Creek and training 50+ AP environmental science students in water testing and macroinvertebrates.

The Ecosystem Award recognizes projects that engage the broader community in watershed management and education, and this project made an impressive impact both inside and outside the classroom.

Award funding will be reinvested into the school’s STEM and science programs to continue supporting education opportunities for students.

🚨EXTREMELY HIGH E. COLI ALERT🚨

WEEK 1 Swim Guide results are LIVE — and E. coli levels at Terrapin Creek Boat Ramp are dangerously high! It’s a serious health risk to enter the water here. Please share and stay safe!

This is the first week kicking off our weekly water quality update from 29 swimming and boating spots across the upper Coosa River Basin, from Weiss Lake to Lake Allatoona.

We test for E. coli, a key indicator of bacteria pollution.

If a site fails, it means E. coli levels exceeded the EPA’s threshold of 235 MPN/100ml - increasing the risk of illness for swimmers.

SSWIM Spotlight Series: Part 3 🐝

Our series continues with this year’s High School Keystone Award winners!

The Floyd CCA Honeybees earned the Keystone Award and a $2,000 prize for their project focused on honeybee conservation and education.

They worked alongside the Berry Bees and the Rome-Floyd Beekeepers Association to research the importance of honeybees and the environmental threats impacting their populations. The team managed their very own beehives, created bee watering stations around campus, and planted pollinator-friendly azaleas.

The Keystone Award recognizes projects with excellence in all areas of participation. It is awarded to the project that displays strong leadership, education, and lasting environmental impact.

Award funding will be reinvested into the school’s STEM and science programs to support future education initiatives!

SSWIM Spotlight Series: Part 2 🌱

Next up, we’re recognizing the Montessori School of Rome’s 7th Grade team who received the Pioneer Award and a $1,000 prize for their project.

Their team designed an aquaponics system using a native river fish to explore sustainability and water systems. The project was cost-effective and environmentally conscious while demonstrating how aquaponics can reduce fertilizer use and chemical runoff.

The students also explored the larger potential of scaling up the aquaponics systems to improve produce production while supporting healthier waterways and ecosystems.

The Pioneer Award recognizes creativity and innovation, and this project stood out for its hands-on approach to environmental problem-solving!

The funding will be reinvested into the school’s STEM and science programs to continue supporting future student learning opportunities.

SSWIM Spotlight Series: Part 1 🐟

We’re excited to kick off our 6-part SSWIM Spotlight Series honoring this year’s award recipients and their incredible hard work!

First up, Berry College Elementary & Middle School’s 8th Grade team earned the Keystone Award and a $2,000 prize for their project.

The Keystone Award celebrates excellence in all areas of participation. It is awarded to the project that supports and enhances environmental stewardship and watershed management through its actions.

Their team monitored the health of Big Dry Creek by collecting physical, chemical, and biological data to better understand the stream’s conditions while also educating others about watershed protection and local waterways.

The funding awarded through SSWIM will be reinvested into the school’s STEM and science programs, helping support future education opportunities for students.
