Chief of Staff Marc Barraco represented our organization as a panelist at this year’s SEMICON West conference in San Francisco. During the session, “America’s Next Fabs: Building Capacity in Real Time,” panelists explored the people, planning, and coordination required to move major semiconductor projects forward. The conversation highlighted the many factors that go into developing a successful site and building the capacity needed to support the industry’s continued growth.

We are proud to have had the Mohawk Valley represented at SEMICON West and to see Marc contribute to an important discussion about the future of semiconductor manufacturing.

Congratulations, Marc, on this well-deserved honor. Your knowledge, leadership, and strong presentation made you a valuable voice on the panel and continue to make you a tremendous asset to our organization.

For more than a decade, public and private partners have worked together to establish the Marcy Nanocenter as one of the nation's premier semiconductor development sites. Announcements such as this reinforce the importance of those efforts and demonstrate the growing strategic significance of the semiconductor ecosystem taking shape in our region.

We look forward to Wolfspeed's continued success and the opportunities this investment creates for our workforce, our communities, and America's technological competitiveness.

Last week, our Senior Economic Development Planner, Jeff Rehler, presented alongside Heather Devitt of Mohawk Valley Economic Development District, Inc. and Natalie Francesco of NJIT TAB at the Upstate New York Brownfield Symposium. During the presentation, Jeff introduced one of our brownfield sites to a panel of experts and the audience, highlighting the project’s potential, progress, and challenges. Afterward, we discussed the site in greater depth with the panel and audience.

This was more than a presentation; it was a collaborative effort among industry leaders to share ideas, help one another, and build connections. There is no manual for solving many of the challenges that arise in economic development. Cleaning up legacy brownfield sites requires people to work together, exchange ideas, and pursue the greater good collectively.

We were thrilled to attend this event with both old and new friends. Collaboration across upstate New York is stronger than ever, and we are ready to build on that momentum. Thank you to BCONE - Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast for hosting us in the Salt City. We look forward to more great events in the future.

EDGE was proud to be part of the steel topping ceremony for the new MetLife building, located on the site formerly known as the “Parachute Shop.”

A steel topping, or “topping-off,” ceremony is a construction tradition in which the final steel beam of a building is painted white and signed by those involved in the project. It also provides an opportunity to recognize and thank the construction crews, organizations, and community partners who helped make the project a reality. EDGE is proud to be one of those partners.

The original structure was built in 1958 and operated as a parachute shop until 1993, when it closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. The building was demolished within the past year to make way for an impressive new 102,000-square-foot, three-story facility that will become home to MetLife.

To see this brownfield site transformed from an underutilized property at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park into a modern facility that will support a thriving company is nothing short of remarkable. This transformation represents exactly what Mohawk Valley EDGE stands for: growth, investment, and a stronger Mohawk Valley.

Congratulations to MetLife, Bonacio, the City of Rome, GLDC, OCIDA, and all the elected officials and community partners who contributed to making this project possible. We are proud to celebrate this milestone and look forward to seeing another outstanding addition to the Griffiss Business and Technology Park take shape.

This week, Chobani sat down with community members and business leaders to provide an update on its dairy processing plant. During the meeting, Chobani’s leadership team, including Kevin Burns, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), and Nishant Roy, Chief Communications and Impact Officer, stood beside Oneida County Executive Tony Picente and City of Rome Mayor Jeff Lanigan to address community leaders directly about the state of the project and what to expect in the future.

The message was clear: Chobani is coming to Rome, and the project continues to move forward every day. Construction on the facility is expected to begin between spring 2027 and summer 2028, marking an important step for one of the region’s most anticipated economic development projects. The facility will be completed in three phases and is projected to bring more than the originally planned 1,000 jobs to the site, creating a significant opportunity for Rome, Oneida County, and the broader Mohawk Valley.

These are exciting times for Rome and the Mohawk Valley. EDGE remains committed to supporting Chobani and all our partners as we continue to grow together. We are grateful to Chobani for providing clear, transparent updates to our partners and the community, and each update adds to the excitement surrounding the project’s continued progress.
