The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s servic

e organization dedicated to promoting:
Patriotism
Preserving American history, and
Securing America’s future through better education for children. DAR members volunteer millions of service hours annually in their local communities including supporting active-duty military personnel and assisting veterans, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and supporting schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars. The DAR is made up of women who come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of interests. Their common bond is their lineal descent from patriots of the American Revolution – any woman, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove this lineage is eligible to join.

Xavier Chapter held its regular monthly meeting today at Coosa Country Club. Our speaker was Junior Member, Jaylee Kilgo. Jaylee is a senior & history major at Georgia Southern. She works for the Coastal Heritage Society and her main base museums are the Georgia State Railroad Museum and the Savannah History Museum in Savannah. For Women’s History Month, she gave an amazing program on The Waving Girl in Savannah. She busted all of the myths and gave us the factual and inspiring story of Frances Martus’s life and the impact she had on the Savannah area.
Jaylee will also be representing Rome, GA in June at the Miss Georgia pageant as Miss Coosa Valley!!! Thank you Jaylee Kilgo for presenting today and best of luck in June AND ALWAYS!

Mary Desha’s Birthday (1850)

March 8 marks the birthday of Mary Desha, born in 1850. She was one of the four founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1890, alongside Mary Smith Lockwood, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Eugenia Washington.

Throughout her life, Mary Desha was a dedicated public-school teacher in Kentucky and Alaska and held various civil service positions in Washington, D.C. During the Spanish–American War, she served as the Assistant Director of the DAR Hospital Corps. Following her passing on January 29, 1911, her fellow members honored her memory with the first memorial service ever held in Memorial Continental Hall.

🇺🇸 March 3, 1931 — America’s National Anthem Officially Established 🇺🇸
On this day, The Star-Spangled Banner was officially adopted as the national anthem of the United States by a congressional resolution signed by President Herbert Hoover.

"Oh Say Can You See...."

The lyrics were written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

More than a century later, Congress made it officially our NATIONAL ANTHEM!

During a recent City of Rome Public Works Committee meeting, members approved a request from the Daughters of the American Revolution to place wreaths on nearly 900 graves at Myrtle Hill this December as part of the Wreaths Across America program.

This meaningful effort honors the service and sacrifice of those laid to rest and reflects our community’s continued commitment to remembrance and respect. We are grateful for organizations that help preserve our history and honor those who served.
