Hello everyone..... For those that may not know him, this is Spencer... we had to euthanize our handsome boy this past Thursday... it was not an easy decision, but one I had to make for him.... for you see.... this horse, this big beautiful boy had a heart of pure gold...
Spencer came to us a little over 3 years ago with not 1, but 2 blown hind suspensory tendons. He did very well the 1st 2 years, this past year took it's toll... the swelling came back, along with the stiffness, no therapy seemed to work, hot, cold, wraps, turnout, stallrest... all to no avail.... and thru it all this horse never once showed his pain, always happy, always eager to please... with as much pain as he was in, he never pinned an ear, offered to bite, or threw a leg... You see... as horse people, we look at their face, the eye expression.... for signs of how they feel, we know when a horse has so much as a slight cold by the look on their face... not Spencer... from the neck up... he was perfection... but he had lost some weight, as horses do, when they are hurting, and I had to look at the whole horse.. not the happy goof that always greeted with a nicker and a soft muzzle on your neck... I saw a horse that stood too far forward on his front feet.. with legs that trembled from pain, a horse that constantly shifted his weight from one leg to the other, but was determined to persevere and be a good boy, no matter the pain he felt. So I made the call... above all else, I could not bear the thought of him declining and not be able to stand from laying down, or becoming angry from pain. That was not Spencer.....and this was the last thing I could do for him to alleviate his pain.
We spent his last day with us in the sun, he had as many apples and carrots he could eat, with me, Dan, and Elise Spitzer fawning over him and waiting on him hand and foot, bringing him whatever he may want as a snack... I hope his last day was a good one... and I hope he knows how much he was loved and how much he is missed...
Racing took his legs from him, and ultimately....... his life.
R.I.P Spence.... see ya on the bridge, bud...
