Today, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the annual burn ban starts this Saturday, March 16, and runs through May 14. With a drier than normal winter, it’s even more important that people adhere to the ban. Open burning of debris is the single-largest cause of spring wildfires in the state.

During today's announcement, Forest Ranger Captain Jackson pointed out wildfires are more likely to spread in the warm, windy conditions. Backyard grills, cooking fires, and campfires less than three feet high and four feet wide are OK, but no fire should ever be left unattended.

Do you know your cones?

In New York, you can find several native and non-native tree species that grow cones, AKA “conifers”, and we’ve pictured just a selection of some of them here.

But there are a lot of mis-cone-ceptions about conifers! Check out the facts below and file them away to impress your pals on your next woods walk:
- Not all cones are pinecones. Pinecones only come from pine trees, but there are also spruces, firs, hemlocks, and other trees that grow cones.
- And not all conifers are evergreens. In NY, we have the tamarack, a tree with cones that drops all its needles each year.
- Some cones (like those of the jack pine) are "serotinus." This means they have a resin coating and require wildfire to release their seeds.
- A cone holds seeds, but it is not a fruit. Conifers are gymnosperms, a group of seed-producing plants that don’t make fruit. The word gymnosperm comes from Greek roots and means “naked seed”.

Happy Thanksgiving from Troop 11!

From all of us at the Leatherstocking Council - Happy Thanksgiving!

As we gather with our loved ones today to give thanks for the blessings in our lives, let's take a moment to remember those who may be less fortunate. Thanksgiving is not just about indulging in delicious food and enjoying the company of family and friends, but also about spreading kindness and compassion.

Let's extend a helping hand to those in need, whether it's through a small act of kindness or a good deed. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of others and truly embody the spirit of Scouting on this wonderful holiday.

Troop 11 participated in Massawepie Scout Camp’s fire tower challenge today. The troop climbed to the fire towers at the top of Stillwater and Bald Mountains. It was a wet day but all had fun anyway.
