Its seriously time to hold Backpacker Magazine accountable for diseminating dangerous information. I just read an article that told people to leave their hatchet at home when in the back country. This is a seriously dangerous reccomendation! Your hatchet or tomahawk is one of your 3 core cutting tools that will keep you alive in a backcountry emergency.
There is NEVER a situation where you should be without a good quality hatchet, tomahawk or machete, a good quality fixed blade knife and a multifunction pocket knife or multi tool. End your subscription to Backpacker Magazine! They are pushing a Plastic Bubble Agenda that is exactlythe wrong attitude in the backcountry.
We in the United States Volunteer Rangers, and our sister organizations around the world are fighting hard to keep these ideas from gaining weight in the minds of outdoors people. Consider joining an organization with ACTUAL KNOWLEDGE OF OUTDOOR SKILLS. Join the United States Volunteer Rangers and start your own local post!
