Below is an update on some new boating laws that start today in Indiana:
Several significant boating safety and water recreation laws take effect in Indiana on July 1, 2026. Key updates include a mandatory kill switch cord requirement, strict restrictions on wake surfing, and new regulations for towing and life jackets.Key Indiana Boating LawsMandatory Kill Switch (Engine Cut-Off) Cord: Motorboat operators are now required to wear a kill cord. This safety device immediately shuts off the engine if the driver is thrown overboard, preventing runaway boats and propeller injuries.Wake Surfing Restrictions (HB 1062): Wake surfing is officially banned on all public lakes in Indiana between sunset and sunrise. Additionally, wake surfing is prohibited on smaller lakes (299 acres or less) that enforce a 10 mph speed limit, unless specific speed exemption periods are already allowed by the Natural Resources Commission.Towed Riders Must Wear Life Jackets (HB 1077): Anyone being towed by a motorboat (such as water skiers or tubers) must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (life jacket) at all times.Towing Curfew: Towing activities are completely restricted between sunset and sunrise. During these hours, motorboats may only be used to tow distressed vessels.Water
