For the past 17 years HDF has been fighting extreme poverty through a unique holistic model of development focused on lasting change. The cornerstone of HDF’s efforts is our commitment to working directly with communities through our social mobilization program. In this, HDF facilitates the formation of democratic community organizations which empower individuals to have a say in the decisions tha

t affect them. HDF believes in "helping people help themselves." This philosophy is carried out by the founding of educational programs, preventative healthcare, empowering communities, creating physical infrastructure, vocational training, as well as economic development programs, where members of the community become the leaders. HDF was formed by the Pakistani-American community, in 1997, as a gift to the people of Pakistan on the 50th anniversary of the country's independence. HDF holds the vision of communities, which are prosperous, vibrant, cohesive and ready to face the challenges of the future. Such activities are sustainable only through grassroots support. To achieve these goals, HDF uses and models a philosophy of distributed leadership and shared responsibility, which encourages volunteers to be the leaders in their own communities.
