Not every step in this process goes as planned. Last week, we received news that may shift our Bolivia project to a new community. While this current community may receive a large water system outside our scope, we’re continuing to push forward with resilience and purpose.

Come to our meeting this Wednesday to be part of the conversation and help shape what’s next!

⚽ Big news! Our Bolivia team has partnered with Bolivia’s national soccer team to help with our water project 💧🏃‍♂️💨

During every match, the players will run a half-time hydration relay—carrying water from local sources to our project sites. Each goal scored earns bonus liters for the villages! 🥅💦

We can’t wait to see them in action… okay, okay, April Fools 😅 But imagine if this actually worked!

Mentor Spotlight: Dave Hoffman 🌍🛠️

We’re excited to highlight Dave Hoffman, one of the incredible mentors who has helped shape our chapter since the very beginning!

Dave has been involved with EWB–S&T since Spring 2005, when the chapter first started. What inspired him to join? A love for designing, building, and traveling, all things that fit perfectly with the mission of Engineers Without Borders.

Before retiring, Dave had a unique career alternating between working as a professional engineer and a professional geologist/engineering geologist. Today, he continues to share that expertise by mentoring all EWB–S&T teams and serving as REIC for many projects, where he reviews and provides feedback on reports to help guide projects toward success.

When asked about his favorite EWB memories, Dave shared that the most meaningful moments have been meeting and working alongside community members during projects. Through these experiences, he says the teams didn’t just work in the communities, they became part of the community family.

Thank you, Dave, for your dedication, mentorship, and the impact you’ve made on so many students and communities! 💙🌎

Preston is a senior Civil Engineer who serves as our Chapter Historian and FR Chair! He interned with Clayco, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field and bringing that knowledge back to our team.

He’s super passionate about our chapter and is always bringing great ideas to the table. When he’s not helping lead and support the team, you can find him playing pickleball or enjoying a slice of Hawaiian pizza 🍍🍕

We’re so grateful for his dedication and positive energy. Drop some love for Preston below 👇👏

✨ Mentor Spotlight: Dr. Leigh ✨

Dr. Leigh first got involved with EWB in Fall 2015 after arriving at S&T earlier that year. Just one month in, he received an email from a student searching for a chlorine colorimeter for a trip, and after discovering our Bolivia projects (a country he had previously spent years in), Dr. Leigh decided to check out a meeting. Although he wasn’t promised a trip… the next summer, he traveled to Bolivia twice! 🇧🇴

As the Director of the Shared Instrument Lab in the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Leigh brings incredible knowledge and experience to our team. He serves as a translator and cultural liaison on trips, is certified in Wilderness First Aid, and reviews our reports and plans, all while not even being an engineer by training!

His favorite part? “There is nothing quite like the joy, delight, and gratitude of the community members when clean drinking water first comes out of the tap.” 💧

We are so grateful for his leadership, dedication, and heart for service. Thank you for continuing to help make clean water possible! 💚

In Bolivia, Sophie found more than a trip, she found more family❤️ She bonded with Luiz Edgar on the soccer field, spent almost every day doing Carla Lorenza’s hair, and fell in love with baby John Pablo, who brought joy to every moment while in community. Claudia welcomed her like a daughter, even dressing her in traditional Indigenous attire and preparing a beautiful parting meal for the team that Sophie will never forget. Even now, they call monthly (weekly when school allows), she sends packages and keeps their bond strong across the distance. Her time with them reshaped how she views life, and she’ll always carry a special place in her heart for her Bolivian family. ✨
