Respect is tipping your delivery driver, your wait staff, your hair stylist, your grounds keeper, your cleaning staff, or anyone who you are appreciative of. I know some companies are now trending away from tipping, but I feel tipping is a proper way to show one's appreciation for service.
EXAMPLES:
If the service was not to your standards, leave a tip anyways, but maybe tip less, and explain to the service person why you did not tip as much as you normally do. This way they can grow and learn from the experience.
And it goes without saying, show your gratitude for excellent service and leave a larger tip when warranted, and point out why you tipped bigger, so they know what to keep doing right.
Also, in those situations where some folks might not have enough cash on hand for a tip. Please, as embarrassing as it may seem for you. It is important to share with your service staff your cash poor right now, so they don’t think they gave you bad service, and rack their brain why they received no tip? Most people will take it personally, and inside they will be a little upset, and these feelings will most likely be transferred to the next person they greet or service.
REAL LIFE STORY:
Once, when I worked as a pizza delivery guy, I didn’t receive a tip, and I know I did everything right. It bothered me so much that I while I was driving back to the restaurant I almost ran in to a tree. I concluded, it was them and not me……and in my head, I labeled them with some words I care not to repeat, as it would be disrespectful. This is another reason why it proper to leave a minimum tip.
For those who have never worked in a tipping position, tips are needed to survive, because of the lower wages usually attached to these positions. In most cases/industries some service providers might have to pay a percentage for working their back to the house. In addition, the tips are even taxed, so they will pay taxes on what you leave on your credit cards, and a percentage of the cash tips which are reported.
Please feel free to share or comment, I believe this is a topic which should be discussed more offten.
Thank you for listening, and showing respect.
