Shalam Ministries Mitigating the effects of trauma with the love of Christ. Our vision is to build Hero's Rest, a retreat center for first responders and their families.

Currently, Shalam Ministries provides assistance and encouragement to those dealing with the aftermath of extreme trauma. Through camping retreats and healing engagement with the outdoor Hero's Rest will meet the needs for rest and recovery that first responders face, Without ways to rest and recover from the trauma they regularly encounter in their work, they are at risk for major adverse effects, including burnout, addiction, and potentially su***de. We have found no retreat centers or places for rest specifically for first responders and their unique needs. Therefore, Shalam Ministries has developed Hero’s Rest to serve our nation’s heroes (firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, etc.). Currently in it's planning and development stages, Shalam Ministries is looking for strategic partners to help launch Hero's Rest. Learn more at www.shalam.org/herosrest. Help us make this possible.

We don't want to forget. We won't forget.

If you were alive for September 11th attacks in 2001, you remember. You remember where you were when you first heard the news 25 years ago. You remember the images of burning buildings, people covered in ash, first responders running right into danger - and for many of them - death. You remember the following hours and your reaction to what you just witnessed. For those who were there, the memories are inescapable.

We won't forget Ladder 118, Betty Ong, United Flight 93. There are hundreds of stories of people making heroic, split-second decisions, many first responders and many ordinary civilians. Today, the time to read their stories, remember their heroism, and pray for the families of the fallen.

Today we remember and honor the fallen.

World Trade Center: 2,753 casualties, including 343 firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers.

The Pentagon: 184 casualties

Shanksville (Pennsylvania): 40 passenger and crew casualties aboard United Airlines Flight 93

An uncounted additional number of rescue workers, cleanup crews, and downtown residents who have since died from illnesses (such as cancers and pulmonary diseases) linked to toxic dust and carcinogens at Ground Zero.

Today, we are celebrating something pretty special at Hero’s Rest! 🎉 Today, Hero's Rest supporters, John and Candy Krug, are celebrating 50 years of marriage!! And they have chosen to celebrate by sponsoring today at Hero’s Rest. ❤️🤍💙

For 50 years they have built a life together, raising three wonderful children - Melissa, Stephanie, and Timothy - who have blessed them with 14 grandchildren! John and Candy have been longtime supporters of Hero’s Rest, and their continued encouragement means more to us than they probably realize. We are so grateful that they have chosen to share this special milestone by supporting first responders and veterans through Hero’s Rest.

Happy 50th anniversary and congratulations, John and Candy! 🎉🎉 We are honored to celebrate your marriage as we continue our work at Hero's Rest. We are so thankful for you both!

🇺🇸 Today at Hero's Rest, we remember and honor Private First Class Richard McGathey, born August 7, 1924. A WWII veteran, PFC McGathey was among the heroic soldiers of the First Infantry Division who stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Just days later, he was wounded in battle. For his courage and sacrifice, he was awarded both the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

His granddaughter, Megan (McGathey) Krug, and her husband Timothy have chosen to sponsor this day (his birthday) in his memory. Through their sponsorship, they celebrate his life, honor his legacy, and keep his story alive. We at Hero's Rest and Shalam Ministries are blessed to stand with them in commemorating his extraordinary service to this nation!

Q. "Why do first responders need retreats?"

A. Because they spend their lives running toward the things most of us run away from.

They see things most people will never see. They experience things most people will never experience. And then, many times, they are expected to go home, get some sleep, and show up for work the next day like everything is fine.

But it isn't always fine.

First responders need a place where they can step away from the job for a little while. A place where they can breathe, spend time outdoors, reconnect with their families, and be around people who understand what they carry.

That's why we're building Hero's Rest. To create that plac for our nation's greatest heroes

We are so grateful for our volunteers at Hero’s Rest! 💪 In the first half of this year we have had more volunteers than in all of 2025!! 🎉 People are excited to support first responders however they can - from donating skilled labor to just dragging branches out of new campsites.
