At 102, Mary has lived a life filled with faith, friendship, service, and adventure. Originally from a small Alabama town, she has called communities across the country home and made friends wherever she went. After retirement, her travels took her around the world—including walking on the Great Wall of China!

One of the most meaningful threads throughout Mary’s life has been her commitment to caring for others. In every community where she lived, she sought out an older neighbor who might need a little extra support—a tradition inspired by someone who once promised to look after her own mother when Mary moved away. For Mary, it has simply been a way of living her faith.

Her advice for a long life? Follow the teachings of Jesus, stay active as long as possible, and enjoy helping and being with others. Welcome to the Century Club of Tennessee

Celebrating more 2026 Century Club of Tennessee members! Miss Jean graduated from Mars Hill College and Furman University, worked for the U.S. District Attorney’s Office and at the Biltmore Estate, and later built a career in education, including launching the Basic Skills program at what is now Tennessee College of Applied Technology and earning her master’s degree at age 67. A devoted wife, mother, church member, educator, and traveler who visited all 48 continental states, Jean credits her long and fulfilling life to her faith, family and friends, finding joy every day, staying involved, and—as her family notes—never turning down dessert!

Miss Kathleen was recently inducted into the Century Club of Tennessee. Her life has been centered around faith, family, and serving others, with a love for gardening, flowers, sewing, needlepoint, games, dancing, and spending time with family, friends, and her church community.

Honoring WWII Veteran Victor Scherrer!!! 🇺🇸
A true American hero is celebrating a remarkable milestone!

Victor Scherrer has turned 105 years old. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard an LCI, a Landing Craft Infantry vessel, designed to carry troops directly onto enemy beaches during critical invasions. His service in the Philippines campaign played an important role in securing victory in the Pacific.

After his time in the military, Scherrer continued contributing to history, working on Skylab in Washington, D.C., the first manned space station operated by the United States.

When asked the secret to his longevity, he shared: “Exercise, a good diet, and a loving family.”

During a recent visit to the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Chief of Staff Dr. Harold Dillon presented Scherrer with a Certificate of Appreciation and a commemorative coin on behalf of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He was joined by his daughter, Marla Merrick, as they celebrated the special occasion together.
