It has been one month since our annual Spring Arts Showcase and we are still amazed by the talent of our students!

Whether it was writing and filming a music video, creating a collaborative Water Lilies exhibit, or building Horizon Academy's very own Little Library, our school year program students spent weeks preparing for this event. It was a wonderful night filled with music, art, science, tech, and more!

The Spring Arts Showcase is a truly special tradition at Horizon Academy. We intentionally set this night aside to help our students, who have spent so much of their life navigating academic challenges, step into the spotlight. Our inventors, artists, writers, performers, and tech savants all shine! The event doesn't just help build our students' confidence, it also empowers them to explore their interests and passions, a crucial step in the development of the whole child.

April showers bring May flowers! 💐

Horizon Academy has a busy month filled with sweet traditions, fun activities, and the celebration of our amazing students! Things we (& all of our kids) are looking forward to:
- Teacher Appreciation Week

What Horizon Academy students want you to know about dyslexia!

Some of the common themes:
- Dyslexia does not define them.
- Dyslexia and ADHD have high rates of comorbidity.
- Dyslexia is/can be a superpower.
- Dyslexia impacts more than just reading.
- People with dyslexia can love reading, even if it is hard.

The language we use when talking about learning differences like dyslexia or ADHD can be incredibly impactful, especially while in school. At Horizon Academy, our students know that people with dyslexia have high levels of creativity, outside-the-box thinking, exceptional problem solving abilities, strong spatial reasoning, and so much more. They also know that their diagnoses do not define them. This is because we intentionally use language that helps them reframe dyslexia as something that makes them unique and resilient, rather than something to be scared or ashamed of.

Happy National Schwa Day!

Did you know that April 7 is National Schwa Day? This day, created by language and literacy specialist Yvette Manns, celebrates the most common vowel sound in the English Language- schwa (ə). The schwa sound appears in the syllable not emphasized, which is said faster and quieter than the emphasized syllable, and sounds like "uh" or "ih".

Some examples of words with schwa: banana, America, pencil, salad, dragon, among, computer, lemon, talent, and cinema.

Fun fact- Manns chose April 7 as National Schwa Day because the words "April" and "seven" both have schwas!

As you may have seen, spring time at Horizon Academy means gardening! 🪏

Horizon Academy students have all spent some time in the sunshine these last few weeks. Why? Because, as our Occupational Therapist (OT) said, "gardening and playing in the dirt provides rich tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive experiences. This activity helps children develop motor skills, body awareness, self-help skills, and fosters sensory and emotional regulation."

This month, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) at Horizon Academy has looked like:
- Working on end-of-year reflections
- Identifying and presenting their future career aspirations
- Attending volunteer field trips to local organizations
- Promoting an upcoming community 5K run
- And so, so, so much more!

These lessons are a crucial part of our curriculum here at Horizon Academy. It is so important for students to learn and apply skills like understanding, empathy, and reflection, no matter their age. SEL helps our students be healthy, engaged members of their communities.

Shoutout to our two school counselors for leading our whole community, including faculty and parents, in these efforts. We are so blessed to have you!
