Kids are getting hospitalized on e-bikes across the region. Injuries up 80% at Dayton Children’s. Kids have died in Franklin Township and Akron.

Rules and education help, most crashes involve kids who don’t know them.

But a Westlake 14-year-old followed every rule, wore his helmet, and still got hit by a semi. Rules don’t stop a truck. Streets do.

Rocky River’s own traffic calming survey has been stalled for months, on the same streets kids already ride.

Kids don’t need another warning. They need safer streets.

Solon fire officials are urging parents to understand the risks of e-bikes after multiple children were injured in crashes, including two who were taken to a pediatric trauma center.

Shaker Heights just held a work session on traffic calming, and a couple of their moves are things Rocky River could try right now, no survey required.

This spring, Shaker's police ran a month-long enforcement detail: 740+ citations, concentrated near school zones. Officials say it actually changed driving habits. They're also applying for a $300,000 federal grant to help fund physical fixes like speed tables and crosswalks, since, like most cities, they don't have a dedicated budget for it either.

Neither of these requires a resident vote. The police could start enforcement tomorrow. The city could pursue grant money right now.

Great news: starting July 31, the City is adding new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, ADA curb ramps, and high-visibility crosswalk markings at the Detroit Road crossing by the high school and St. Christopher Church. A real win for the students, parishioners, and neighbors who cross there daily. Thank you to the City for prioritizing this one.

Pedestrian Safety Improvements Coming to Detroit Road

Beginning Friday, July 31, the City of Rocky River will begin pedestrian safety improvements at the existing pedestrian crossing on Detroit Road adjacent to Rocky River High School and St. Christopher Church.

The project includes:
- New Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs)
- ADA-compliant curb ramps
- High-visibility crosswalks

These improvements are designed to make crossing Detroit Road safer and more accessible for pedestrians of all ages and abilities, particularly students, parishioners, and residents who regularly use this crossing.

The concrete work, including the new ADA-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks, is anticipated to be completed by mid-September. The final installation and activation of the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) will be completed upon delivery of the units, as installation is dependent on the manufacturer's lead time.

During construction, residents and motorists should expect:
- Temporary sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours
- Occasional lane restrictions on Detroit Road
- Construction equipment working within the public right-of-way

Please use caution when traveling through the work zone, follow all posted signage, and be mindful of construction workers.

Wagar Road - Construction Update - July 23, 2026

The signal contractor is completing the traffic loop at Wagar Road/Hilliard Blvd today and the traffic striping contractor is performing the markings. Wagar Road and Westway Drive are expected to reopen to traffic in both directions either later today or tomorrow.
