Night and day, from dirty and oxidized to clean(er) and ready for lids & repack

These oil cups are from NC&STL 701's crossheads the larger being engineers side and smaller being firemans. Over the years the caps were lost and the oil slowly dried atop leaving a gunk mess in the dirt filled cotton scraps. Both were removed Tuesday and brought home for a cleaning. From removing the debris to initial wash. Then worked with brasso to this point. A future video will come out showing what work was preformed. Until then, enjoy this little piece of progress. We will be hunting for new lids in the near future at steam & gas engine shows.

Thus a 1950 NYC Nathan M3 horn was the perfect fit for our little locomotive. She already had a shelf to fit it on and we just need to hook up a steam line.

We are joking, this Horn belongs to our Member Thomas from the Nashville Steam Preservation Society whom was visiting for the Big Boy's operation

Unfortunately our work session today was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, despite this one of our members was in Pittston PA to witness the largest operational locomotive in the country, Union Pacific Big boy 4014.

He is a monster next to our little fleet. Infact, if NC&STL 701, the boxcar, and D&H coach 3 with the Plymouth 250 and Baraboo flat car were all lined up together, it would only be 85 foot long, next to this 132 foot long machine!

Just for fun... a short clip of Matt running loco 250 this past March on the Loys and Woodland Creek Rwy. in MD. We keep the society's 2' gauge equipment in MD and the 3' Gauge equipment in Ralston, PA. It's planned to allow people to run 250 in MD for a small donation. More info to come soon.

Vulcan locomotive No. 701 is more than just a 0‑4‑0 narrow‑gauge engine—it’s a survivor with a story worth telling.
Thanks to our Matt Stegura, you can now watch the complete history of this locomotive and follow its incredible journey back to Pennsylvania.

Check out the video and see why No. 701 holds such a special place in our preservation efforts.

Please support this restoration project. Our GoFundMe link is the first comment. Thank you!

From dry and dirty to slightly wet and clean! NC&STL 701's underside got a power washer bath. Removing years of Caked dirt leaving a much nicer to work on engine behind. After that bolts had PB blaster re applied. Although most grime is gone a degreaser will be used to break the dry oil chunks across the locomotive.

1867. The Civil War ended two years ago. The Transcontinental Railroad won't be completed for another two years. In Honesdale, Pennsylvania, a wooden coach is being built for the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company's narrow-gauge gravity railroad. That coach, #3, is still here today- in 2026! Coach 3 has survived for 159 years, while most of its contemporaries have rotted away, burned, or been scrapped.
Coach 3 is the oldest surviving narrow-gauge passenger coach in the United States. Arguably, it is the third- or fourth-oldest in the world!
We own it, and we are restoring it!
Coach 3 is now in its permanent public home at the Loyalsock Valley Antique Machinery Association Inc. in Ralston, PA.
👉We need your help and support now so that we can continue the forward progress of this important restoration and preservation project. Any amount is extremely helpful.
