Membership
During our ten meetings throughout the year, we hear from guest speakers from the community, socialize among the membership, and discuss our major fundraisers, such as our annual fall mum sale and our annual spring bargain sale. All proceeds from the Junior Guild’s fundraisers are directly funneled back into the community. Each year, we select four community recipient organizations to receive funds raised but also continue to support several other organizations throughout the year such as the Salvation Army angel tree program and bell ringing along with other various causes, as well as our Junior Guild scholarship program for outstanding local young women attending college. Every member is committed to 36 hours of volunteerism per year coordinated through the Junior Guild. Active members serve for seven years before becoming sustaining members. We are always looking for new members! If you think you would like to be involved with a group of dedicated community volunteers, please contact [email protected] for more information. We look forward to hearing from you! Our organization has been serving the Rocky Mount community for more than 75 years, and has grown into one of the most outstanding civic clubs in the city. Our History: A legacy to be proud of! The Junior Guild of Rocky Mount was founded in 1937 when a group of women answered the request of Dr. Allen Whitaker, in conjunction with the Health Department, to help with the Whitaker's Baby Clinic for underprivileged children, with the goal of lowering the infant mortality rate. Thus, The Junior Guild was formed, making its objectives to foster interest among its members in the social, economic, and civic conditions of the community and to make efficient the volunteer service of its members. To these original objectives has been added the improvement of the educational and cultural conditions of the community. The Junior Guild has moved successfully through the decades by striving to keep up with the changing needs of the community while holding firm to its goals. This is evidenced by the Guild's involvement with and support of such organizations as My Sister’s House, United Way of Rocky Mount, United Community Ministries and The Salvation Army, to name a few. The Guild also continues to hold puppet shows at the Children’s Museum, a tradition since 1949.
