DID YOU KNOW…
Today is Purple Heart Day.

The Purple Heart was created by General George Washington, first President of the United States, in 1782, then called a Badge of Merit. It was awarded to soldiers who performed heroic and notable actions; Washington himself awarded only three.

The Badge of Merit became the Purple Heart in 1932, given to honor those wounded in combat and for commendable actions, and in 1944, it was decided it would be specifically awarded to those who were wounded or killed in action.

Purple Heart Day has been observed since 2014. It is a day to honor, remember and show gratitude for those who have gone above and beyond in the line of duty, which the members of the VFW Auxiliary do today and every day.

Each year, we share the winning Young American Creative Patriotic Art, 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art and Illustrating America contest art on our social media ahead of National Convention.

This year is no exception! However, we will be sharing them a bit differently. As we've had a record number of entries, we are not able to share every one from each Department for all three competitions. Instead, we will be counting down all of the National Winners starting on Friday, August 1 (tomorrow), with the final winners – first place for the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest and the 3-Dimensional Art Contest – being uploaded early in the morning on August 9, ahead of the opening of the Exhibit Hall at the Columbus Convention Center, where National Convention will be held.

Each day prior to National Convention, we will share three winning works, beginning with Young American Creative Patriotic Art National winners in 19th, 18th and 17th place, continuing until we have shared through 2nd place, then 4th, 3rd and 2nd place in the 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest and finally 3rd, 2nd and 1st place in the Illustrating America contest (all grade levels).

As always, we remind visitors to our Facebook and Instagram pages to remember that these works of art were created by talented, patriotic students in grades K-12. While we welcome positive feedback and sharing of the posts, we reserve the right to delete any comments that are political/partisan, overly critical or rude. Additionally, hate speech will result in an immediate ban from the VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters social media pages; cruelty will NOT be tolerated.
