The Twin Counties Literacy Council, a 501(c)(3) organization, was incorporated in 2011 in order to serve the needs of adult learners ages 16 and older in Nash, Edgecombe and the surrounding counties. It is estimated that the percentage of adults who lack basic prose literacy skills in Nash County is 16% and 25% in Edgecombe County. Based on population estimates, this means there are almost 30,000 adults who cannot read at a basic level in the two counties.
